Each district in Hong Kong has its own unique character. Central, in particular, perfectly blends high luxury with a down-to-earth atmosphere, creating its distinctive urban charm. Recently, we conducted a field visit to Central, hoping to observe the various aspects of the region's commercial activities.

In this article, we focus on "Central Market," a revitalized market project that vividly embodies the "life force" of Central.

Basic Information of Central Market

Central Market is located at 93 Queen's Road Central, Hong Kong, a mere 5-minute walk from high-end shopping malls such as Landmark Atrium and IFC. Its commercial area is only 12,000 square meters. The project's predecessor was a meat and vegetable market. In 2009, it was included in the conservation and revitalization project (urban renewal) by the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region government, and in 2017, it embarked on a three-year transformation journey. The project was completed in 2021 and returned to the public eye. Within two years of opening, it accumulated 26 million visitors, becoming a popular commercial destination for both locals and tourists.

From the on-site observation, Central Market has three floors, GF-L2, primarily featuring F&B and cultural and creative retail, with over 100 stores. The project has a multi-level structure, with GF connecting to Pedder Street; 1F connecting to Queen's Road Central; 2F features a 24-hour pedestrian passage.

Specifically,

GF is a food haven. This floor features Central Food Court, similar to a large food court, with various food stalls. After selecting your food, you can choose any available seat. The offerings mainly consist of fast food, such as Pizza Hut, Pulau (a Singaporean-themed restaurant), Pho Nho (Vietnamese beef noodle soup), Atap House (Southeast Asian cuisine), and Jiu Jiu ChewTaiwan (braised pork rice).

The market function is also retained, with half of the space dedicated to CHEF’S MARKET, selling kitchenware, sauces, ingredients, alcohol, and anything else needed in a kitchen. Additionally, there is a restaurant, Chef's Cuts, offering light meals primarily targeting office workers in Central.

During our visit at lunchtime, the seating area was almost full, with queues forming, and various stalls had numerous customers ordering food.

L1 is divided into Hong Kong Courtesy, Heritage Hall, and event spaces. "Hong Kong Courtesy" is a collection of Hong Kong's time-honored brands and local innovative brands. It features brands such as Ding Ding Partner Old Hong Kong Office and Fisherman's Office.

This floor also features AURATHE ORBIT, Hong Kong's first art studio offering rotating art workshops and courses. We noticed that this store was quite popular, with many people participating in workshops that day.

The "Heritage Hall" is a cultural space where people can pause and experience Hong Kong culture.

L2 connects to the 24-hour pedestrian passage. This floor features Central Food Street and Hao Dian stalls. Central Food Street houses several coffee and dessert shops and snack shops.

Here, we also discovered an interesting shop, Slowood, a general store selling slow-living aesthetics and a zero-waste store. All products are unpackaged or use biodegradable materials, mainly selling household goods.

It must be said that the lively atmosphere and local feel created by Central Market gave me a relaxed shopping experience. As a visitor, although there are no obvious internet-famous check-in spots, the "urban oasis" and "retro minimalist" design make you want to take photos.

For example, the atrium design team of Central Market preserved and utilized the courtyard-style design, allowing people to move freely in a natural, borderless space. The open atrium space on GF is designed as a green square, creating a very relaxing atmosphere.

At the same time, the GF floor also introduces the concept of "planning cultural heritage experiences," transforming Hong Kong's classic market dome lights into large-scale art installations. 500 miniature "egg lights," scaled down to their original proportions, hang from the ceiling, showcasing the charm of Hong Kong's traditional culture.

On F2, 400 green plants and white planting cubes are combined on the ceiling of the 24-hour pedestrian street to form a green arcade, creating an urban oasis.

Overall, the renovated Central Market cleverly uses retro and nostalgic scenes and uses the market concept to recapture the feeling of free shopping. Its creation of a refined, lively atmosphere is worth learning from for every small-scale commercial project.
