By National Day 2024, a total of 65 indoor ski resorts have been opened in mainland China, with 6 closed. Another 10 indoor ski resorts are under construction, and 7 have been signed.

Indoor Ski Resort Size Classification

For skiing, the ski slope is the most important resource. Ski slope data consists of three parameters: length, slope, and width, which extend to three commonly used ski resort size evaluation indicators:

1. Total length of ski slopes, or skiable distance, the most commonly used indicator for large European ski resorts, but it only represents quantity, not quality, so it is usually used in combination with other indicators.

2. Maximum vertical drop: When the slope of the ski slope has upper and lower limits, the greater the vertical drop, the longer the skiable distance. In addition, the greater the vertical drop, the more likely there are more difficult ski slopes. Therefore, the vertical drop is often used to represent the difficulty of the ski resort or the quality of the ski slopes.

3. Skiable area, which is the length of the ski slope multiplied by the width, is usually used to express the capacity of the ski resort. However, this data also needs to be combined with the vertical drop, otherwise it is easily inflated by low-quality ski slopes. It is particularly important to note that the snow area/cold area advertised by Chinese indoor ski resorts includes not only the skiable area but also a large amount of snow entertainment area, so it is not meaningful to skiers.

The slope and width of the ski slopes in indoor ski resorts are designed to be within a reasonable range, so the vertical drop among the above three indicators becomes the most important parameter for measuring the scale of indoor ski resorts. Indoor ski resorts are divided into four scales: micro, small, medium, and large, based on vertical drops of 20/40/60 meters.

  • Micro: Vertical drop less than 20 meters, ski slope length less than 200 meters, suitable for beginner to intermediate levels.

  • Small: Vertical drop between 20 and 40 meters, suitable for beginner and intermediate levels.

  • Medium: Vertical drop between 40 and 60 meters, suitable for intermediate and advanced levels.

  • Large: Vertical drop over 60 meters, suitable for beginner, intermediate, and advanced skiers.

Among the 65 indoor ski resorts built in China (including 6 that have been closed), 80% are micro and small ski resorts, mainly serving local tourism and entertainment and the popularization of snow sports. In the past two years, the construction of large indoor ski resorts has shown an explosive trend. Before September 2024, there were only 3, and it is expected to increase to 8 by the end of 2025.

Geographical Distribution of Indoor Ski Resorts

By the end of 2025, there will be 64 indoor ski resorts nationwide, half of which will be in Zhejiang, Hubei, Hunan, Shaanxi and Jiangsu provinces:

Zhejiang has 6 micro ,1 small and 2 medium-sized indoor ski resorts;
Hubei built has 4 micro, 1 medium and 1 large indoor ski resorts;
Hunan has 5 micro, 1 small indoor ski resorts.

Shaanxi and Jiangsu each have 5 indoor ski resorts among the top five, and each has built one medium-sized indoor ski resort. The top five provinces have 5 of the 7 medium-sized indoor ski resorts nationwide, but only 1 large indoor ski resort.

The distribution of large and medium-sized ski resorts across the country is relatively even, with currently only Hubei province having two large and medium-sized ski resorts. However, after 2025, Guangdong will become the region with the best four-season skiing conditions in China with two large indoor ski resorts.

List of Large Indoor Ski Resorts

By the end of 2024, 5 large indoor ski resorts will be built in China, among which Harbin Re-Snow Miracle, with a vertical drop of 80 meters, has become the largest in China and the fourth (tied) largest indoor ski resort in the world in terms of vertical drop. However, this record will be surpassed in 2025 by Shenzhen Qianhai Huafa Super Snow Center with an 83-meter vertical drop and Changchun Wanda Plaza Ice and Snow Center with an 85-meter vertical drop.

List of Medium-sized Indoor Ski Resorts

From the perspective of actual skiing experience, medium-sized indoor ski resorts have the "playability" required for entry-level skiing. However, small and large indoor ski resorts cater to "leisure/experiencers" and "enthusiasts", two distinctly different customer groups, while medium-sized indoor ski resorts fail to appeal to either, resulting in a somewhat awkward position. It is likely for this reason that the number of large indoor ski resorts in China is expected to exceed that of medium-sized ones by 2025.
