As Shanghai's first large-scale professional amusement park, Shanghai Jinjiang Amusement Park holds countless happy childhood memories for countless Shanghainese. Now, Shanghai Jinjiang Amusement Park, which has been in operation for over 40 years, will officially close on January 26 for a two-year upgrade and renovation, with plans to reopen in 2027.

Located between the inner and outer ring roads of Minhang District, Shanghai Jinjiang Amusement Park was established in 1984. Covering an area of 103,000 square meters, it boasts over 30 large-scale amusement facilities. It was the first large-scale amusement park in Shanghai to introduce and build foreign amusement facilities after the reform and opening up. Its iconic building, the "Shanghai Big Ferris Wheel," as the first Ferris wheel in China exceeding 100 meters, has been a landmark building of the park and a landmark landscape in southwest Shanghai since its completion in 2002.

Grand Return in 2027
Creating a New Landmark for Culture and Tourism

With the development and changes of the city, Shanghai Jinjiang Amusement Park has long been integrated into the urban built-up area, with direct access to Metro Line 1, making its geographical location extremely advantageous. However, the rise of large theme parks such as Shanghai Disneyland, the increasingly diversified needs of tourists, and the aging of the park's own facilities have all brought considerable competitive pressure to Jinjiang Amusement Park. Comprehensive renovation and upgrading has become the only way for the park to regain its vitality.

This renovation project of Jinjiang Amusement Park will be carried out based on the positioning of "preserving historical memory, introducing high-quality IPs, and creating a people-friendly space." It aims to create a model project for Shanghai's urban renewal and a classic urban park in the central city, striving to become a new landmark for Shanghai's culture and tourism and a new highlight of the "first stop for inbound tourism in China."

The existing 108-meter-high "Shanghai Big Ferris Wheel" will be upgraded to a giant Ferris wheel of 128 meters in the future, possibly becoming one of the tallest Ferris wheels in China. This will not only further enhance the park's attractiveness and recognition, but also bring a more impressive experience to tourists while preserving the park's historical memory.

A Harry Potter Theme Park May Be Introduced

In terms of introducing high-quality IPs, the most eye-catching is the possible introduction of a Harry Potter theme park project. At the on-site consultation activity of the Third Session of the 14th Shanghai Municipal Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference on January 14, Zhang Qi, Deputy Director of the Shanghai Municipal Bureau of Culture and Tourism, said that a Harry Potter theme park is expected to be located in Shanghai.

According to current information, Jinjiang Amusement Park plans to cooperate with Warner Bros. Discovery Group to introduce the "Harry Potter's Birth Studio Tour" project. This project will 100% restore classic scenes from the movie, bringing an immersive magical experience to tourists. If this project is finally implemented, Jinjiang Amusement Park will become the third Harry Potter theme park in the world after London and Tokyo, greatly enhancing the park's attractiveness and competitiveness.

It is reported that the Harry Potter theme park will allow tourists to experience the magical world of Harry Potter by 100% restoring classic scenes from the movie, featuring immersive experiences, simultaneous indoor and outdoor park planning, and overall area renewal.

According to preliminary estimates, the "Harry Potter's Birth Studio Tour" project will achieve an annual reception of 2 to 2.5 million tourists, revenue of $150 to $200 million, and pre-tax profit of $40 to $80 million.

Tokyo opened the first Harry Potter theme park in Asia in 2023.

Citizens and tourists have expressed their expectations for the upgrade and renovation project of Jinjiang Amusement Park. By introducing high-quality IPs and creating people-friendly spaces, Jinjiang Amusement Park will further improve its quality and service level, providing tourists with a better experience. The introduction of the Harry Potter theme park project adds unlimited possibilities to the park's future. It is expected that Jinjiang Amusement Park will become a new benchmark for the renewal of Shanghai's urban cultural and tourism projects and inject new vitality into Shanghai's cultural and tourism industry.
