Lanterns are important decorations for festivals and a crucial component and expression of traditional culture. Recently, with the popularity of characteristic lanterns from various places, such as "Xia Yuhe" by Daming Lake, "Ashima" in Kunming, Yunnan, and "White Snake Returns to Spring" in Zigong, Sichuan, lantern festivals that blend traditional craftsmanship with modern creativity have once again become a focus of public attention. Currently, preparations for "lantern festival" construction are successively underway across the country.

As the best way to highlight the festive atmosphere of the New Year, lantern festivals showcase the city's cultural heritage and humanistic charm, and have always been a highlight of Xi'an's New Year celebrations. The eagerly anticipated 2025 Year of the Snake "Chang'an Lantern Festival" is about to light up, and a visually stunning feast full of New Year cheer is in full preparation.

Tang Paradise

The 54-day Chang'an Lantern Festival · Tang Paradise will debut on January 22nd, the eve of the Lunar New Year. This lantern festival will primarily follow the theme of "Stepping into Shangyuan in One Step," composed of 40 sets across 5 major themed lantern zones: "Shangyuan Lighting, Floral Shadows Reflected in the Night, Silken Beauty, Shangyuan Celebration Songs, and Ever-bright Chang'an," comprehensively and three-dimensionally outlining the ambiance of Chang'an's Shangyuan Night.

Tang Paradise, based on the traditional customs of the Shangyuan Festival, integrates lantern displays, cultural performances, experiential programs, dining, and themed merchandise, forming 5 major Shangyuan chapters, 8 major themed markets, and 2 special New Year performances for the Year of the Snake, along with 8 newly added New Year series performances. It strives to create an immersive interactive experience where "lanterns are admired within scenery, scenery exists within lanterns, and lanterns and scenery intertwine," allowing citizens and tourists to deeply experience the joy of a prosperous Tang Dynasty banquet tour.

As of now, the layout work by the artists of the Chang'an Lantern Festival, featuring a flourishing Tang garden and lanterns like daylight, has been fully completed. Lantern group welding work has reached 80%, and the overall setup work is 80% complete. Please look forward to the "Splendid Tang Charm" amidst the brilliant lights and join us for a "Shangyuan Celebration Song."

Xi'an City Wall

This year's Chang'an Lantern Festival · Xi'an City Wall will feature 5 major themes and 23 large lantern sets, including "Celebrating the New and Old Year Together," "Greeting the New Year with Joy," "Seeing All Chang'an Flowers in One Day," "You Come from Your Hometown," and "Waiting for New Things Every Year," recreating the lively atmosphere of traditional New Year celebrations. Citizens and tourists can enjoy exquisitely beautiful lantern groups and experience the strong Chinese New Year atmosphere, feeling the unique charm of traditional Chinese festivals, along the Wenchang Gate—Wumu Gate section and Yongning Gate area.

What's more interesting is that this lantern festival will also replicate 38 precious cultural relics from museums in the form of lantern sets, meeting visitors in this fun way and bringing the relics to life.

In "Moon City · Auspicious Snake Presents Blessings," you can see the "Green Jade Human Head and Snake Body Ornament," and in "Eight Immortals of Wine," you'll discover the "Ox Horn-shaped Three-color Peacock Cup" and "Dancing Horse Holding Cup Pot"... Various uniquely shaped lantern components are being prepared in an orderly manner, promising more excitement and continuous good shows, embarking on the most dazzling New Year fantasy journey of the Year of the Snake on Xi'an City Wall.

Daming Palace National Heritage Park

During the New Year, Daming Palace National Heritage Park, guided by "palace lanterns" and mediated by "flower lanterns," will create five major themed areas around the central axis's "one axis, five zones" layout: "Danfeng Sings Nine Compositions," "Hanyuan Reads Chang'an," "Xuanzheng Celebrates a Prosperous Year," "Zichen Greets the New Year," and "Taiye Reflects Penglai." Based on Daming Palace's cultural attributes, historical background, exhibited relics, and historical anecdotes, 13 super-large lantern sets are planned and designed to create an atmosphere of brilliant lanterns and festive joy in the Tang Daming Palace, building a romantic and beautiful "palace aesthetics" feast and a new landmark for integrated and complementary Tang culture experiences.

As of now, the palace lantern research and development and production team is busily preparing for various tasks of the lantern festival. The designer's layout work has been fully completed, and the lantern group welding work is proceeding in an orderly manner.

2025 16th Deyang Lantern Festival

The 2025 16th Deyang Lantern Festival, with the theme "Three Stars Shining Brightly · Spiritual Snake Presents Auspiciousness," is about to grandly open. It will be held at Xuanzhu Lake in Deyang from January 24, 2025, to February 16, 2025.

The lantern festival meticulously crafts 5 major themed sections, with "ancient Shu culture" as its soul and "high-tech equipment" as its body. Lantern sets from 7 districts, cities, and counties, along with over 50 themed lantern sets, will illuminate each other, bringing you a dreamy experience of ancient and modern blending and diverse cultural碰撞.

The lantern festival takes Sanxingdui as its main element and the unique culture of each district, city, and county as inspiration. It meticulously designs five major lantern sections: "Blessed Auspicious Scenery," "Xuanzhu Overflowing with Color," "Sanxing Dreamland," "Deyang Radiance," and "Treasure Adventure," creating a fantasy world of light and shadow that deeply integrates Deyang's regional characteristics with ancient Shu civilization.

8 splendid performance areas, with a lake light show and an intangible cultural heritage exhibition on the water, fully demonstrate the charm of intertwining lake and lanterns. Kung fu tea ceremonies, avant-garde folk music, trendy national dances, and Hanfu fashion shows will be performed all day long on the 12 constellation stages.

Guangzhou Lantern Festival

The "Shining China · Glorious Greater Bay Area" 2025 Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Lantern Festival will be held from January 22, 2025, to March 30, 2025, at Nansha Tianhou Palace, Puzhou Garden, and Binhai Park. At that time, hundreds of sets and thousands of colorful lanterns will illuminate the night sky, presenting tradition and modernity, local and international, unity and diversity to citizens and tourists.

This lantern festival is planned and designed against the backdrop of the 2025 Lunar New Year celebration, combining the "dual intangible cultural heritage" of Chinese New Year and Zigong Lantern Festival. It aims to connect the cultural tourism resources of the Greater Bay Area's "9+2" cities into a chain, utilizing modern technology and interactive light and shadow art to collectively showcase the spirit of pioneering, enterprising, and innovative cooperation throughout the province, conveying the contemporary atmosphere of Greater Bay Area integration and global openness.

The "Carp Welcomes Prosperity: Fullness" lantern set located at Beixiu Lake is composed of koi fish, various flowers, a light sculpture background, and bulb light decorations.

After completion, the 128-meter-long, nearly 17-meter-high light group will feature programmed chasing and changing lights on the background LED light strips and decorative spotlights. Once lit, it will showcase the transformation of a fish leaping into a dragon. Visitors can try running along the 100-meter light group by the lake, racing towards 2025 with the carp and chasing good fortune.

Another highlight of Bei Xi Lake is the "Double Fish Chasing Waves" light group, measuring 14 meters in length and width and 10 meters in height. The entire light group is vibrant and dynamic, standing three stories tall.

This year's Spring Lantern Festival features a rich and colorful lantern viewing route, passing through three entrances of Yuexiu Park and connecting ten themed exhibition areas. Visitors can choose the main entrance, north entrance, or Ethereal Gate as their starting point for their journey.

Those who want to see the magnificent phoenix crown and the 100-meter carp are recommended to enter directly from the main entrance.

To head straight to the "City of Poetry," "Ancient City," and "Ancient Seal" light groups and experience a time-travel moment, enter from the north gate.

If you want to see both the "Ancient Style Impression" and "Hundred Flowers in Full Bloom," start from the Ethereal Gate!

The 31st Zigong International Dinosaur Lantern Festival

The 31st Zigong International Dinosaur Lantern Festival, scheduled to open in the China Lantern World before next year's Spring Festival, will be themed "Lanterns Celebrate China, A Thousand Different Scenes." It will feature 12 extra-large lantern groups, 7 large lantern groups, and over 200 medium and small lantern groups to depict the myriad scenes of China.

As the "top tier" of Chinese lantern exhibitions, this year's festival will focus on seven themed areas: "Welcoming Spring and Celebrating the New Year," "Jurassic Valley," "Fairyland," "Joyful Celebration," "Zigong's Time Wheel," "Civilization's Brilliance," and "A Path of Flowers."

Inspired by Zigong's "Three Small Wonders" paper-cutting art, a giant gate spanning 55 meters; the "Abundant Harvest" lantern group, ingeniously combining lanterns with glass medicine bottles and porcelain; the tallest single "God of Wealth" figure in Zigong Lantern Festival history, standing 9 meters tall; and the 220-meter-long "Splendid China" lantern group, perfectly presenting the scenery of Chinese classical mythology…

It is worth mentioning that, with the arrival of the Year of the Snake in the lunar calendar, this year's lantern festival will be based on the Chinese folk legend "The Legend of the White Snake," creating giant "internet celebrity" lantern groups of the White Snake and Green Snake. The two sisters stand side by side, Bai Suzhen exuding fairy-like elegance and heroic tenderness, Xiaoqing vibrant and mysterious, as if transporting viewers to a world full of fantasy and romance.

More advanced technology, more diverse lantern themes, a more internet-famous aesthetic atmosphere, and a more influential business model output… This year's lantern festival will bring four upgrades, further promoting the festival's transformation into something "beautiful, fun, delicious, and enjoyable."

Zigong is also known as the "Home of Dinosaurs." This year's lantern festival innovates in "beauty" once again, utilizing the valley terrain of the park and cleverly integrating Zigong's characteristic simulated dinosaurs, Zigong lanterns, and cutting-edge AI technology to perfectly recreate the prehistoric Jurassic dinosaur valley. In the valley, there is also a "dinosaur squad" that has "traveled" to the Jurassic period, interacting with tourists through advanced visual recognition, multi-sensory interaction, and high-precision sound source positioning technologies.

In addition, the lantern festival not only pursues excellence in lantern art but also achieves comprehensive upgrades in operation services, traffic planning, and visitor experience. To address the issue of visitor traffic, the lantern festival's road traffic layout will be further optimized, with enhanced detail control during peak hours and the planning of festival-themed lantern shows during off-peak hours, adding performances and parades to the night-time activities.

Last year, the Zigong Lantern Festival broke the dimensional wall, collaborating with several top domestic IPs, causing a wave of visitor check-ins. This year, it will be launching a "national trend".

According to the organizers, this year's lantern festival will collaborate deeply with well-known national comic IPs and game IPs, creating a complete immersive scene at the lantern festival site, incorporating exciting live performances and interactive experiences. The "famous scenes" from comics and games will be showcased one by one. The deep integration of cultural tourism and trendy IPs will bring visitors a unique immersive lantern feast.
