If you want to know where in the world has the most and largest theme parks, Abu Dhabi, the capital of the UAE, must be on the list; if you want to know which theme park is the most popular in Abu Dhabi, where theme parks are everywhere, then Yas Waterworld on Yas Island, the adventure park themed island, must be one of them.

In the year-round heat and sandstorms, the dual extremes of desert and ocean, there's truly nothing more pleasant than visiting a cool and exciting water park. In such a wealthy city, always striving to compete with neighboring Dubai and break world records, Yas Waterworld naturally became one of "the best (and most luxurious) water parks in the world."

Behind the staggering USD 250 million investment, which is hard to match, lies an even higher return—in its first year of operation, Yas Waterworld attracted 700,000 visitors, continuously gained global popularity, and won numerous awards. Besides its luxuriousness, what made this water park such an attractive place? Naturally, it's the perfect presentation of every experiential aspect.

Perfect IP Storyline

Compared to its abundant oil production, the UAE's ancient pearl diving industry is less known. However, this traditional pearl industry, with a verifiable history of almost 8,000 years, has always been regarded as a treasure by the UAE.

 Image

As both a cultural heritage of the UAE's traditional industry and closely linked to the element of "water," pearls naturally became the core theme of Yas Waterworld Abu Dhabi. Based on this theme, Yas Island constructed a legendary story of "The Lost Pearl."

Searching for the Lost Pearl

The story behind Yas Waterworld revolves around a pearl diving village named Qaryat Al Jewana.

Like the village's guardian, a giant pearl brought wealth and happiness to the village. However, in a fierce storm, the pearl disappeared. Without the pearl's protection, and compounded by the plunder and threats from bandits, the villagers' assets diminished daily.

Years later, a child named Dana—the daughter of the chief pearl diver—after hearing the legend of the lost pearl, resolved to go with her friend, the dolphin "Bubbles," to find this lost pearl and bring wealth and happiness back to the village.

 Image

In her search for the pearl, Dana journeyed through the desert, befriending the camel Hallool, the gazelle Dhabi, and the falcon Shaheen, and received a new clue: "The pure pearl is lost within a sapphire, which, along with an emerald, is set in gold." Dana and her friends solved the riddle—the pearl was hidden in a lake within a desert oasis near the village.

 Image

However, the journey to find the pearl was not smooth. A group of greedy bandits eavesdropped and tracked them along the way, wanting to claim the treasure for themselves. After a series of struggles and clever tactics against the bandits, Dana and her friends finally reached their destination. However, they mistakenly took the moon reflected on the oasis water as the lost pearl.

Just as Dana thought her efforts had failed and sat by the water crying, a rumbling sound arose, and the pearl magically emerged from beneath the water, bringing new wealth and prosperity to the village once again.

 Image

This is undoubtedly a wonderful treasure hunt-themed story. Besides being inspired by the UAE's millennia-old pearl diving industry and using it as a clue, it also features Islamic cultural characteristics similar to "One Thousand and One Nights" and embodies most universal elements found in Disney-like fairy tale kingdoms.

Such a story setting perfectly shaped the unique and global appeal of Yas Island Waterworld. By combining the storyline with venue design and play experience design, every visitor to the park can fully immerse themselves, embark on an unforgettable adventure with Dana, experience the highlights of various amusement themed areas within the story, watch live performances of the story's characters, take photos with their favorite characters, and fully and realistically appreciate this wonderful 5D animated story in the 5D cinema, which is no less classic than Disney.

Epic Water Experience

Centered around the theme of "searching for the lost pearl," this Yas Island Waterworld, covering an area equivalent to 15 football fields, boasts 43 water rides (5 of which are world-firsts). It is divided into different play zones, catering to all age groups and interests, ensuring that every visitor and family can choose suitable attractions and experience an epic water adventure.

In addition to actual pearl diving in the Pearl Diving Museum and collecting their own pearls from oyster shells, Yas Waterworld has almost pushed the water theme to its extreme. Here, visitors can find almost every game that uses water as a medium for play—rafting, surfing, diving, water slides, splash pads, water balloon bombs, water cannon blasts, geysers, underwater VR…

However, pleasing everyone is difficult, and understanding visitors' minds is like finding a needle in a haystack. Achieving full coverage in an amusement park is not an easy task. Therefore, Yas Waterworld started by analyzing visitor needs, subdividing experience design into two dimensions: age appropriateness and thrill level.

Age Dimension

The large themed areas in the park are divided by age appropriateness, such as comprehensive play areas suitable for all ages, rafting zones, wave areas, and family play areas—within these themed areas, more games suitable for all ages are set up, such as surfing, picnics, rafting, treasure hunting, and splashing;

In the play area suitable for children aged 3-12, there are various water slides of different heights, various water activities, and multi-person circular tracks that promote family interaction, which are irresistible to any child;

▲Bandit Bomber Riders can use onboard water to launch water bombs, fire lasers, and engage in interactive battles with ground visitors

In the high-difficulty experience area suitable for those aged 12 and above, there are several challenging water amusement projects, such as the super exciting Dawwama water-powered whirlwind waterway.

For each amusement facility, the park has set minimum height restrictions to ensure the safety of young visitors. Even young mothers can play with their infants in a special low-age area.

Stimulation Level

According to the level of stimulation, the park divides the amusement facilities into four levels: Adrenaline Rush for those seeking speed, Exciting Adventure for those seeking adventure and excitement, Moving & Grooving for those seeking relaxation, and Young Fun for teenagers.

Whether you like speed and passion, want an exciting adventure, are looking for water leisure on holiday, or want to spend quality time with your children, visitors can have a great time in the park.

Atmosphere Creation in line with the Theme

For a theme park, atmosphere creation around the theme helps enhance the park's integrity and visitor immersion, and Yas Waterworld is well aware of this.

 Image

First, the story of finding the lost pearl is based on traditional Emirati villages, so the park's buildings and structures have a distinct Emirati coastal village style. The towering core Jebel Dhana, with its 8-meter-diameter giant pearl and cascading artificial waterfall, is a well-deserved new landmark of Yas Island.

 Image

Secondly, in the storyline hidden in the amusement facilities, atmospheric surprises are everywhere. During the game, visitors can easily find various characters and their characteristics in the story of "Finding the Lost Pearl": for example, the camel hump slide based on the body curve of Dana's desert friend camel Hallool; the falcon waterway experiencing the diving speed of the falcon Shaheen; or playing the role of the bandit villain who always causes trouble for Dana, conducting crazy water bomb attacks on the ground on the bandit bomber…

Among them, the water slide area, which occupies the largest area, highlights the slide shape of a desert giant horned viper (a highly venomous snake in the local desert). Visitors slide down from different water slides, either dark or cool, and finally "escape" from the lifelike giant snake's bloody mouth into the water, completing a special snake belly adventure.

 Image

At the same time, on the background of large areas of desert color and blue water, the amusement facilities in Yas Waterworld use many high-purity color contrasts, bringing a strong visual impact to the thrilling and exciting game experience, leaving visitors with an unforgettable impression.

 Image

There must be relaxation after excitement. In the rest area of the wave-making area, this visual impact is greatly reduced, turning into a broad and open vision and a relaxing experience like a vacation on a tropical beach. Visitors resting here can "watch from the other side", enjoying the sun, palm trees, and beach while watching the exciting game scenes in the distance like watching a performance.

Comprehensive Supporting Facilities

 Image

In addition to the extremely rich water amusement facilities, Yas Waterworld also has an open-air theater, an open-air market, a pearl diving exhibition, luxury resort hotels, and various themed shops.

Most of the supporting service facilities are concentrated at the park entrance and exit, forming a large comprehensive service area. However, almost every theme area is equipped with corresponding catering and shopping service facilities. More intimately, the park has set up places to dry clothes in the main water play areas, and evenly distributed several first-aid points (possibly because the game projects are really too exciting and the possible risk of drowning) in various play areas of the park to provide necessary safety protection for emergencies.

The Core of a Theme Park: Theme and Experience

From 1985 to 2020, China's theme parks have been growing. In terms of growth, the development of theme parks in China has entered an increasingly crowded track. Therefore, exploring and mining the experience we can learn from world-class classic theme parks is a necessary path.

Although the author listed Yas Waterworld, with an investment of US$250 million, as a luxury park at the beginning of the article, compared with the popular theme parks in our second-tier cities, which often invest more than 3 billion yuan, the author believes that what our theme parks lack is far more than just the scale of investment.

Taking Yas Waterworld in Abu Dhabi as an example, its neighbors are Ferrari World, Warner Bros. World, and other international IP or theme park giants, but it still won world-class praise with a seemingly very localized IP. The reason is simple—everything is to create a unique and wonderful play experience for visitors:

 Image

The success of Yas Waterworld lies first in its scarcity—Yas Waterworld is the first water-themed amusement park in Abu Dhabi, and it also caters to the needs of people from other countries in the world to enjoy water-themed amusement in a place full of tropical charm;

Secondly, it found a theme storyline that combines local traditional cultural heritage and can be recognized by international tourists, and fully integrates it with the park's site design and play experience, forming a distinct characteristic and atmosphere;

Furthermore, it fully considers the needs of all tourists and families, and designs it to accommodate different types of play, providing a wonderful experience where everyone can find happiness, thereby covering the widest range of visitors;

Finally, although playing here is all about thrill, it still prioritizes safety (especially for children) and consistently places importance on the user-friendliness of its supporting facilities.

These factors, beyond mere luxury, actually create a good themed water park.
