Yesterday, Shanghai Disney Resort announced that it will expand its iconic themed attraction, "Avengers Campus: Aerial Adventure." Once the expansion is complete, visitor capacity will increase by approximately 50% compared to current levels.
This is merely a ripple in the wave of Shanghai's theme park upgrades.
Looking at the bigger picture, in addition to the already-opened LEGO-themed area, Shanghai Disney's ninth major themed zone, "Spider-Man," is currently under intense construction. Meanwhile, the main structural work for all venues and hotels in Phase II of Haichang Ocean Park has been completed. Shanghai Happy Valley has launched its revitalization plan dubbed "Super Happy Valley," while Jinjiang Paradise is introducing the Harry Potter IP for a comprehensive upgrade. At the same time, Pudifoo Guangming City is accelerating its renovation efforts, and the Peppa Pig-themed amusement park continues to move forward with its development plans.
Shanghai's current wave of intensive park construction and upgrades isn't just broad in scope—covering Shanghai's major theme parks—but also involves substantial investment and a diverse range of enhancements, showcasing an all-around, multi-layered evolution. , Together, they have created an innovative experimental platform for China's theme park industry.

Upgrading strategies where everyone showcases their unique skills
1. Shanghai Disneyland
Besides the newly announced "Fly Over the Horizon" expansion project, Shanghai Disneyland is currently building its ninth major themed area, "Spider-Man," which spans over 20,000 square meters and boasts a total investment of approximately 2.459 billion yuan. The project includes six distinct architectural structures along with extensive landscape development, with the centerpiece being a groundbreaking facility that features… A 24-meter height difference and a speed of 100 kilometers per hour Spider-Man ” Roller coaster. Adjacent to "Zootopia," the park will blend themed dining, retail, and interactive entertainment to create a fully immersive superhero-themed experience.
This expansion marks Shanghai Disney's latest major investment, following "Toy Story" and "Zootopia," and continues its pace of refreshing the guest experience with top-tier IPs every 3 to 4 years. It also reflects the implementation of Disney's global $60 billion investment plan for its experience segment in the Chinese market.

2. Shanghai Happy Valley
Shanghai Happy Valley's "Super Happy Valley" revitalization project boasts a total investment of 2.6 billion yuan and spans eight years, aiming to establish the park as the national flagship venue for Happy Valley. The project plans to integrate trendy Chinese cultural IPs and immersive experiences, with a focus on developing Chinese-style sci-fi attractions—and will introduce Asia's first standing roller coaster.
Notably, this roller coaster features electromagnetic launch technology and draws its design inspiration from surfing. The train is equipped with a safety mechanism that allows for vertical movement, accurately recreating the thrilling sensation of turbulent waves. It also incorporates exhilarating elements such as extreme banked turns and 360-degree loops. Once completed, it will complement the experience offered by the existing attraction "Absolute Thrill."
3 Shanghai Haichang Ocean Park
As a key component of its strategic expansion, Shanghai Haichang Ocean Park's Phase II project—known as the "Eastern Ocean Project—will feature a total investment exceeding 1.8 billion yuan and span approximately 140,000 square meters. The new development includes a diverse range of accommodations, such as an ocean-themed hotel and a hotel inspired by internationally renowned IPs like "One Piece," along with world-class marine culture performance venues and unique amenities like hot spring wellness facilities. Upon completion, the park is expected to see its annual visitor capacity soar from over 5 million to between 7 million and 8 million guests.

4 Jinjiang Amusement Park
This latest introduction of the Harry Potter IP to Jinjiang Amusement Park marks the largest-scale, strategic upgrade in the project's 40-year history. With a total investment of approximately 2.8 billion yuan and a planned site area of about 53,000 square meters, the park is collaborating with Warner Bros. to recreate iconic Harry Potter scenes and immersive interactive experiences, offering visitors an unforgettable, cinematic-style adventure.
Meanwhile, Jinjiang Amusement Park's iconic "Shanghai Big Ferris Wheel" will be rebuilt and upgraded to 118 meters in height, with enlarged cabins and an advanced smart system. This upgrade is expected to be completed in phases from the end of 2027 to early 2028, with the goal of boosting annual passenger traffic from 800,000 to approximately 2 million. Leveraging resources from Jinjiang International Group, the project aims to create an integrated, one-stop cultural and tourism ecosystem that combines parks, hotels, and commerce. Once completed, it will be China's first—and the world's third—"Harry Potter Studio Tour."
5 Peppa Pig Theme Park
According to previously released information, the Peppa Pig-themed amusement park has officially announced its arrival on Changxing Island in Shanghai's Chongming District. The project will span an impressive 290 mu of land, with an estimated investment of approximately 2.4 billion yuan. The main park area is preliminarily planned to include five major themed entertainment zones: a Peppa Pig-themed street, a city-themed park, an ocean-themed park, an ice and snow-themed park, and a nature-themed park. These areas will be complemented by commercial streets, multiple themed retail stores, and uniquely styled restaurants, among other amenities. Upon completion, it will become Asia’s first—and the world’s largest—outdoor Peppa Pig-themed amusement park.
The Evolutionary Direction of Theme Parks
Shanghai theme park's "Super Evolution" is fundamentally a systematic transformation aimed at responding to market demands. We can observe the following evolutionary directions for the theme park:
1、 Capacity Expansion and Enhanced Load-Bearing Capacity , Balancing Efficiency and Experience
The wave of expansion sweeping through Shanghai’s theme parks is far more than a mere increase in scale—it represents a profound revolution centered on operational efficiency and the quality of guest experiences. At its core, the focus has shifted from merely managing the overwhelming crowds to crafting a high-quality, "comfortably enjoyable" experience for visitors—marking a significant leap forward in the industry’s maturity.
Disney's "Avengers: Quantum Encounter," one of the park's most popular attractions, has long been plagued by notoriously long wait times—often measured in "hours"—which have been a major pain point for visitors. After the expansion, capacity has increased by approximately 50%, directly enabling more guests to enjoy the core experience within each hour and significantly cutting down on queue times. This not only frees up valuable time for visitors to engage in secondary activities but also represents a deeper exploration of "the value of guest time." By optimizing the "throughput" at key touchpoints, the park is enhancing its overall operational efficiency and delivering a smoother, more seamless experience for everyone.
Similarly, the ambitious second-phase plan for Haichang Ocean Park—spanning over 140,000 square meters—and the upgrades to the Jinjiang Amusement Park’s Ferris wheel—from 108 meters to 118 meters in height and increasing its cabin capacity from 6 to 15 passengers—both follow a comparable logic. This expansion is systematic: it not only involves adding more attractions but also comprehensively enhancing supporting facilities such as hotels, dining options, and retail spaces. The ultimate goal is to extend visitors’ stay from a “few-hour day trip” to an “immersive, multi-day vacation experience,” thereby boosting the average spending per guest.
2、 Immersive experiences and IP Empowering becomes a core competitive advantage
If expanding capacity is about strengthening the "skeleton," then immersive experiences and IP-driven empowerment are about infusing the "soul." Shanghai's theme parks are now fully shifting away from the mere assembly of mechanical rides, instead focusing on creating "storyscapes" that evoke deep emotional connections.
Disney's IP applications hardly need further explanation. Jinjiang Amusement Park's complete transformation into the "Harry Potter Studio Tour" is the ultimate example of a traditional attraction reinventing itself. What it offers isn’t just a few IP-themed roller coasters—instead, it allows visitors to step behind the scenes of film production and personally experience the magical world’s immersive textures.
The effectiveness of Haichang's "OAAS + IP" dual-drive strategy—demonstrated by a 23% year-on-year increase in IP business revenue—alongside Happy Valley's distinctive approach to cultivating "national-trend IP," highlights the diverse potential of IP applications. While Haichang collaborates with international IPs to rapidly enhance its offline experiences, Happy Valley delves deep into local culture, further reinforcing its cultural confidence.
These initiatives demonstrate that a successful theme park must be a robust content platform capable of consistently generating or integrating compelling stories and characters, fostering an emotional connection with visitors that goes beyond a single visit.
3、 Technology empowerment and experience innovation go hand in hand.
The role of technology is undergoing a profound transformation. No longer a dazzling gimmick, it has seamlessly integrated into the very fabric of our experiences—much like oxygen and water—simultaneously boosting excitement, enhancing convenience, and enabling personalization across three key dimensions.
When it comes to enhancing the overall experience, Shanghai Happy Valley’s introduction of Asia’s first standing electromagnetic launch roller coaster stands as a prime example. The technological highlight isn’t merely its speed, but rather how it uses electromagnetic propulsion to simulate the explosive power of riding a wave at sea—capturing both the exhilarating rush and the unpredictable, thrilling motion of ocean swells with precision. Here, technology seamlessly serves the creative vision of "sensory immersion," making the thrill not only more tangible but also deeply narrative-driven.
In terms of enhancing convenience, technology plays the role of an "invisible butler." From seamless payments and smart queuing systems to AI-powered guided tours—and even the newly upgraded, WiFi-covered Ferris wheel at Jinjiang Amusement Park—these technologies quietly eliminate friction during the visitor experience, allowing guests to fully focus on enjoying every moment.
4、 Differentiated competition and market segmentation strategies are evident.
Facing fierce market competition, Shanghai’s theme parks are carving out their own niche by adopting differentiated strategies. Disney continues to strengthen its powerful original IP and immersive, fantastical experiences; Haichang Ocean Park focuses on marine themes and animal conservation; Happy Valley emphasizes mechanical rides combined with Chinese cultural elements; and Jinjiang Paradise is transforming into an immersive, movie-themed experience.
Shanghai's theme park market showcases differentiated competition, particularly through the segmentation of its target audiences. Haichang Ocean Park focuses heavily on families with children, while Happy Valley attracts younger visitors. Meanwhile, the upcoming Harry Potter Studio Tour is poised to become a must-visit hotspot for movie fans and fantasy enthusiasts alike.
……
Above all, the collective upgrade of Shanghai's theme parks is far from over.
From Disney's IP ecosystem to Haichang's independent innovation, from Jinjiang Paradise's business model transformation to Happy Valley's exploration of emotional value—these practices collectively point to one conclusion: the core competitiveness of theme parks has shifted from "the thrill level of attractions" to "the depth of immersive experiences, the resonance with cultural values, and the precision of service." In the future, competition will no longer hinge solely on facilities and intellectual property—it will increasingly revolve around the overall experience and the ability to innovate.
