When it comes to Munich, Germany, many people may not think of surfing. However, this city, famous for its Oktoberfest, has sparked a surfing craze because of the unique river wave on the Eisbach River in the city center. However, Munich's inland location means that surfing is almost impossible anywhere else. But now, things have changed...
The world's newest surf park is making waves in Munich for the first time
Endless Surf is the wave-making technology used by O2 SURFTOWN MUC. It officially unveiled its first wave, marking the imminent arrival of Germany's first surf park. Since the project was announced in 2021 and made headlines, surfers in Germany and Europe have been eagerly awaiting world-class, ocean-like waves. With images and videos of the first wave spreading rapidly across the internet, the city's desire for the next generation of surf pool technology is evident.

These initial waves have already showcased the Endless Surf technology's unique capabilities in wave quality, operational flexibility, and wave customization. Professional surfer, Olympian, and Red Bull athlete Leon Glatzer was one of the lucky few to experience the initial waves in Munich. “This technology is changing the future of surfing,” said Leon Glatzer. “Witnessing the first wave in my hometown was an unforgettable experience. In fine-tuning the wave shape with the engineers, I felt the amazing precision and power of Endless Surf. They have created unimaginable wave settings, and what I experienced is probably just the tip of the iceberg of all possibilities. The flexibility and diversity of this surf pool is amazing, it will excite surfers and keep them coming back for more.”
Paul Chutter, President and Co-Founder of Endless Surf, reiterated the revolutionary significance of the first wave. He said: “The first wave that surged forth demonstrated the unparalleled flexibility and controllability of our technology in practical application. The special significance of this moment is not only for the professional team behind this project, but also for the many destinations around the world that will showcase Endless Surf technology. We are proud to work with the vibrant team at SURFTOWN to help solidify Munich's position as a European surfing hub.”
Utilizing the most flexible and responsive technology ever
At the heart of o2 SURFTOWN MUC sits the Endless Surf ES34 surf pool. Through robust pneumatic hardware and proprietary software suite, 34 wave-making chambers will deliver powerful customizable waves. From beginner-friendly waves to barreling waves for free surfing, everyone can find their perfect wave at O2 SURFTOWN MUC, regardless of skill level or surfing style. The surf pool, in Endless Surf's single peak mode, can generate waves up to 2.1 meters high with a maximum ride time of 18 seconds.

Clement Ginestet, CTO of Endless Surf and one of the founding team, said: “We are incredibly proud of everything we have created in Munich, as our initial vision for Endless Surf is being proven in real life. Endless Surf provides us with an unprecedented level of precision and control in the surf pool field, and the possibilities it offers are truly endless. For the past few years, we have been asked if the system works as promised. The answer is yes, and what we are seeing now is just a glimpse of its potential.”
While this is the world's first Endless Surf, it's not the company's first large-scale wave pool. Endless Surf's parent company, WhiteWater, is the world's largest designer and manufacturer of water park attractions, with experience building hundreds of wave pools since 1987. The launch of Endless Surf is a natural progression, incorporating proven best-in-class technology and innovation to create surfing-specific waves with amazing power, customization potential, and operational flexibility.
The first wave is just the beginning
This is the first of the first waves in over a dozen projects Endless Surf is developing around the world. The vast majority of them utilize Endless Surf technology with nearly 75% more wave-making chambers, meaning more customization and longer ride times, with the longest ride time up to 32 seconds.
With the rapid development of the surf park industry and the successful first wave, Endless Surf is well-prepared to change the future of inland surfing for developers and consumers. Endless Surf aims to “help developers create world-class surf destinations that are viable and sustainable businesses.”
Michi Mohr, Chief Surfing Officer of O2 SURFTOWN MUC, pointed out that this project is of great significance to German surfers. “Surfers in Munich and even the whole of Germany have always had difficulty accessing ocean waves, which is why we want to create a place to meet this need. We will see professionals with high expectations for surfing training here, and a large number of intermediate and beginner surfers who hope to improve and learn in a safe environment. When we created the first wave and saw that it really made it possible for people of all skill levels to realize their surfing dreams here, our dreams also came true, which was truly unforgettable.”
The project broke ground in July 2022, and construction has progressed rapidly over the past year and a half, transforming a vacant lot in the Munich Business Park in Hallbergmoos, next to Munich International Airport, into Germany's first surf park. With the filling and surfing debugging completed, the finishing touches are being put on this world-class facility, which will soon bring waves to surfers in Germany, Europe, and other countries. O2 SURFTOWN MUC is scheduled to grand open in the summer of 2024, when the venue and surfing lessons will be open to the public.
