Summer is a crucial operating season for theme parks around the globe. Many parks rush to open new attractions and projects before the summer vacation begins, from drone shows and float parades to roller coasters... What new theme parks have opened or are about to open this summer? What innovative recreational projects have been launched?



New Parks/Theme Parks



Peppa Pig Theme Park, Germany



The first independent Peppa Pig theme park on the European continent

Opening Date: May 19




 


On May 19, Merlin Entertainments opened the 30 million euro Peppa Pig Theme Park, adjacent to the Legoland Germany.


The Peppa Pig Theme Park in Germany features 5 accessible children's play facilities and 7 playgrounds, along with live animation character performances and interactive sessions. It is also the first park to feature Peppa Pig in Lego Duplo form and a Lego Duplo Peppa Pig play area.



Tír na nÓg Park



Emerald Park, Ireland

Opening Date: May 22



 



Emerald Park's new Tír Na nÓg park, built over 7 years at a cost of €22 million, boasts Europe's longest family and thrill roller coasters. The park covers 6.5 acres and includes three new attractions: Na Fianna Force, The Quest, and The Celtic Dreamer, as well as a Zierer Wave Swinger and new dining and retail spaces.



Camp Snoopy Expansion Project



Kings Island

Opening Date: May 24




 


Kings Island in Mason, Ohio, officially opened a new children's area called "Camp Snoopy" on May 24. The area features the Snoopy's Soap Box Racers roller coaster, the Beagle Scout Acres play area, and a restaurant called Pigpen's Mess Hall.



Shanghai Pude Fu Guangming City



Opening Date: May 28



 


With a total investment exceeding 650 million RMB and a total area of 46,000 square meters, this project aims to provide a brand-new "offline real-scene movie" experience. Each visitor feels as if they are immersed in a real-scene performance, embarking on a new immersive entertainment experience, and is expected to become another model of Shanghai's urban renewal. In addition to the large "immersive viewing" theater, there are also cultural and creative retail, restaurants, cafes and other cultural and entertainment facilities. The expected annual number of visitors will reach 1.2 million.



Fantasy Springs



Tokyo DisneySea

Opening Date: June 6




 




Fantasy Springs, built at a cost of 250 billion yen, is Tokyo DisneySea's eighth park and its largest expansion project since its opening. The park centers around a "magical spring leading to a Disney dream world," showcasing classic scenes from Disney animated films such as Frozen, Peter Pan, and Tangled.


It also features four unique new attractions: the water-based Anna and Elsa’s Frozen Journey, Rapunzel’s Lantern Festival, the ride-based Peter Pan’s Never Land Adventure, and Fairy Tinker Bell’s Busy Buggies for visitors to experience.



DreamWorks Theme Park



Universal Studios Florida

Opening Date: June 14





Located in a corner of the park, it was built on the basis of the original children's area known as Woody Woodpecker's KidZone. The park will retain most of the existing infrastructure to provide new experiences, such as the Trolls Trollercoaster and Po’s Kung Fu Training Camp, redesigned from KidZone's children's roller coaster and Curious George play area, respectively. The theme park will also include character greetings in Shrek's swamp and a DreamWorks Imagination Celebration parade.


Huangshi OCT Dinosaur Wonder



Opening Date: June





Located on the shores of Daye Lake in Huangshi, Hubei Province, this project was built with a total investment of 3 billion yuan by Huangshi State-owned Assets Company, covering a total area of 1583 mu. The park mainly includes Dinosaur Water World, Dinosaur Dream Factory, hotel commercial street, petrified forest, Aiqinghai open area, and the main venue of the Horticultural Expo. The park features various interactive experience areas, incorporating high-tech means such as virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR), allowing visitors to travel through time and experience the magical world of ancient times.


New "Steam Town" Park



Six Flags America

Opening Date: June





Six Flags' new "Steamtown" area will open in June 2024, telling the story of an eccentric character named Professor Screamore. The park will introduce one new ride and three existing rides: SteamWhirler, Professor Screamore's SkyWinder, Quantum Canyon Rapids, and ElectroDerby.


Snoopy's Camp



Knott's Berry Farm

Opening Time: This Summer




 


Knott's Berry Farm in Buena Park, California, is upgrading its Camp Snoopy area, which will reopen in summer 2024. It is reported that the camp will add four new rides, including a new theater (Camp Snoopy Theater), "Snoopy's Tenderpaw Twister Coaster", "Camp Snoopy's Off-Road Rally", and "Sally's Swing Along".



Yichun Fantasi Theme Park



Opening Time: July 6





Located in the Yichun Flower Expo Park, the Yichun Fantasi Theme Park project has a total investment of approximately 1.8 billion yuan. It includes two parks, "Bear Outing Park" and "Fantasi Water Park", with more than 50 indoor and outdoor amusement projects, hundreds of leisure landscapes, restaurants, and specialty shops. It aims to become Yichun's "family-friendly leisure and entertainment destination", offering visitors a joyful and dreamy amusement experience.

Snow Monster's Fury



Xiang OCT Fairy Tale Valley, Huizhou

Opening Time: May 1





Visitors sit in the "Snow Monster's" embrace, being lifted to a height of nearly four stories as the "Snow Monster" sways, accompanied by sound, light, and electrical effects, experiencing weightlessness and excellent high-altitude views.


Jungle Adventure Family Coaster



Shenzhen Happy Valley

Opening Time: May 1





"Jungle Adventure" family launch spin coaster is the first dual-launch family coaster in China, manufactured by Golden Horse. The coaster has a maximum speed of 64 kilometers per hour, a track length of 610 meters, and uses LSM electromagnetic launch drive technology. The track design combines dual launch sections with a spinning car body, allowing the train to instantly launch at high speed. During the ride, the car body rotates freely, providing passengers with a variety of fun experiences.


Little Yellow Duck Big Drift



Tianjin Happy Valley

Opening Time: May 1





Visitors enjoy interacting with the ducks in water rafting and fun theme games. The cute B.Duck elements immerse visitors in a joyful atmosphere. Visitors can ride rafts down the river, enjoying a refreshing water adventure.


Iron Menace Dive Coaster



Dorney Park

Opening Time: May 10




 



Dorney Park's Iron Menace dive coaster is manufactured by B&M. The coaster suspends passengers nearly 50 meters in the air before a near-vertical 95-degree drop. Four unexpected inversions and speeds up to 103 kilometers per hour captivate riders.



Good Gravy! Family Coaster



Holiday World

Opening Time: May 11



 


Good Gravy is located in the Thanksgiving section of the theme park and is manufactured by Vekoma. The coaster is 1500 feet long and reaches speeds up to 37 mph. Riders board a giant gravy boat-shaped train and enjoy a thrilling ride along a cranberry-colored track—they'll also pass through a giant cranberry jelly jar and oversized kitchen utensils, including a 20-foot-tall mixer and an 18-foot-tall rolling pin. The cranberry jar tunnel is 17 feet long and 13 feet wide.



Na Fianna Force Suspended Coaster



Emerald Park, Ireland

Opening Date: May 22





Na Fianna Force is a suspended thrill coaster manufactured by Vekoma, with a maximum height of 32 meters and a speed of 90 kilometers per hour. Named after the legendary Celtic warrior band, this coaster, the larger of the two in the Tír na nÓg area, features an overhead track, ensuring an unprecedented adrenaline rush.


The Quest Family Spinning Coaster



Emerald Park, Ireland

Opening Date: May 22





The Quest is a family spinning coaster manufactured by Vekoma. Passengers embark on an adventure exploring the mysterious Tír na nÓg, speeding to the top of an abandoned castle tower at 60 kilometers per hour and a height of 25 meters.


Celtic Dreamer Wave Swinger



Emerald Park, Ireland

Opening Date: May 22





Themed after the famous Irish legend "The Children of Lir," Celtic Dreamer is a classic wave swinger. This 56-seat ride is vibrantly colored, allowing visitors to soar high in the air and overlook the park's scenery.


Dolly Parton's Experience



Dollywood

Opening Date: May 24



 


The Dolly Parton Experience is a museum-like attraction consisting of four sections. Songteller is the most striking part of the experience, with a reflective butterfly exterior. As visitors walk through this exhibit, they will learn about Parton's journey from her youth to the present day. Highlights of the exhibit include Parton's mother's "Coat of Many Colors" that she made for her as a child, along with several guitar displays, museum signage, and photo opportunities.



Snoopy's Soap Box Racers Roller Coaster



Kings Island

Opening Date: May 24



 


Snoopy’s Soap Box Racers roller coaster was built by Vekoma Rides. The coaster will move back and forth along the track, reaching speeds of up to 36 miles per hour. Riders board the themed coaster, which is lifted 70 feet up a hill to the starting line. As Snoopy waves a flag, riders are released, rushing forward along the twisting and winding track before experiencing the same track in reverse.



Potato Smash Bumper Cars



Kennywood Park

Opening Date: May 25





Bring your best potatoes and take a ride on one of the cheesiest rides around! Themed after Kennywood's signature Potato Patch® fries, this ride features 20 newly refurbished bumper cars. Even better, more families can enjoy the experience together, and the height requirement for riders is lower.  


The Flash: Speed Force



Warner Bros. Movie World

Warner Bros. Movie World theme park opens its new roller coaster, The Flash: Speed Force. This 30-meter-high ride will take visitors on a thrilling journey, reaching speeds of up to 70 km/h. Get ready to twist, turn, and accelerate along the 67-meter-long half-pipe track as the Flash battles his greatest nemesis, Reverse Flash.



Bobcat Roller Coaster



Six Flags Great Escape Theme Park

Bobcat is a wooden family roller coaster. This coaster combines classic charm with modern innovation, taking riders up to a height of 55 feet and speeding along at nearly 40 miles per hour. Upgraded coaster trains ensure comfort, tighter turns deliver maximum thrills.


4D Theater: "Boonie Bears: Return to Jurassic"



Zhuzhou Fantasi Theme Park

Opening Date: June 1




 



"Boonie Bears Theater: Return to Jurassic" is another new high-tech 4D theater project launched by Zhuzhou Fantasi Theme Park. The "Boonie Bears Theater" project integrates a rotating platform, live scenes, and panoramic 4D special effects images, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in a fun-filled Jurassic adventure.



Stage Show: "Rhythm of the Adventure"



Shanghai Disneyland

Opening Date: June 3 to October 7






 


"Rhythm of the Adventure" brings together five different musical styles: local folk music, big band, hip-hop, Latin jazz, and pop. The special feature of the entire show is that visitors will have the opportunity to enjoy different versions of the performance. The five musical styles each correspond to two different musical pieces and adventure stories, and each story will be interpreted by different Disney friends. Their random combinations will give visitors different surprises each time they watch the show.



Tiana’s Bayou Adventure

Disney announced that Tiana’s Bayou Adventure will open on June 28. According to the introduction, Tiana’s Bayou Adventure is Disney's reimagining of the previous "Splash Mountain" ride. The Disney design team has redesigned the attraction and created new music and storylines inspired by the animated film "The Princess and the Frog". The attraction is not a retelling of the Disney animated film, but an original story based on events from the film.



Wolf Legend Drop Tower



Gardaland

Opening Date: June





This 82-foot-tall Drop & Twist Tower, opening June 2024, has a 47-inch height requirement and a capacity of 350 guests per hour. Upon boarding, guests will hear a ceremonial chant, surrounded by shimmering symbols and featuring extraordinary lighting effects. Upon reaching the top of the attraction, guests will drop into a smoky haze, repeatedly rotating around the tower's axis multiple times, for a truly unique experience.


SteamWhirler



Six Flags America

Opening Date: June





Six Flags' new "Steamtown" area will feature a new ride, SteamWhirler. Located in the center of the town, it is built by Zamperla. It spins riders around a track propelled by four rotating arms synchronized by a central gear system. Each rotation will lift riders from their seats.


Georgia Surfer

Opening Time: This Summer




 


The Georgia Surfer will debut this summer at Six Flags Over Georgia, combining roller coaster thrills with a unique water ride experience.


This roller coaster may look simple, but appearances can be deceiving. Riders will race back and forth along nearly 590 feet of U-shaped track, reaching speeds up to 60 mph and a 144-foot peak before splashing down onto a scenic splash pad. Instead of traditional roller coaster cars, the ride uses circular platforms that rotate independently, situated atop surfboard-shaped structures that travel along the track.



Phoenix Rising



Busch Gardens Williamsburg

Opening Time: This Summer





In a May 23, 2024 press release, park officials listed Phoenix Rising as "opening this summer". Manufactured by Bolliger & Mabillard, Phoenix Rising features a unique suspended design, reaching speeds of 44 mph, and is considered a family-friendly coaster. This is the park's first coaster with onboard audio, playing "a unique soundscape".
