A water park is an entertainment venue mainly featuring water amusement facilities, providing a place for the public to relax and play during summer vacations. What are the challenges in building a water park? This article starts with the types and characteristics of water parks, analyzes the main problems and challenges in the design and construction of water parks, and provides corresponding solutions for reference by relevant personnel during planning and construction.

Classification of Water Parks

1. Classification by Scale

Water parks vary greatly in size. They are usually classified into large, medium, and small water parks according to their land area, number of equipment, and tourist reception capacity.

[Figure 2] Large Water Park (Guangzhou Chimelong)

Large and medium-sized water parks have their own traffic and can become regional tourist destinations, such as Chimelong Water World, Atlantis Water Park, and Happy Valley Maya Beach. Water parks can attract a large number of people, promoting the development of surrounding businesses, tourism, and real estate.

Small water parks have a smaller radiation range due to their limited scale, but their layout is more flexible. They can be located near areas with high traffic flow, such as urban areas or suburban areas, scenic tourist areas, commercial centers, and hotel resorts, forming a virtuous cycle of resource sharing and mutual promotion with existing facilities.

Large and medium-sized water parks have higher requirements for land area, location, and investment. In recent years, the number and speed of their construction have slowed down significantly. Small water parks, with their small investment and high flexibility, will increasingly appear around us.

2. Classification by Venue Type

Water parks can be indoor or outdoor. Outdoor water parks have tourists, equipment, and facilities in an open-air environment, while indoor parks are located in large-span buildings.

[Figure 3] Indoor Water Park (Macau Studio City)

Most of the currently built large and medium-sized water parks are outdoor water parks, mainly operating during the summer months and closing during other seasons. The short operating period is an inherent defect, which has a significant impact on the sustainability of operations and the stability of the operation and maintenance team.

Some indoor water parks are equipped with constant temperature and humidity air conditioning systems, allowing them to operate year-round. However, the willingness of tourists to swim in winter is not high, and the number of tourists is much lower than in summer. Some water parks have both indoor and outdoor sections. In summer, both sections can be open to accommodate large crowds during peak season. In other seasons, the outdoor section is gradually closed according to temperature and tourist volume, and only the indoor section is open in winter, saving operating costs while maintaining adequate reception capacity. For areas with mature supporting facilities and relatively stable tourist flow throughout the year, this is a good solution worth learning from and promoting.

Challenges in Water Park Design

The core of a water park is the water amusement facilities, and the water system equipment provides a continuous and stable water source for the water amusement facilities. The design should focus on these two key aspects.

Challenges in Water Park Construction

Due to the special seasonal characteristics of water parks, controlling the opening date is the most important goal of construction management. Amusement facilities and hydropower water treatment systems should be the main lines to organize all work in an orderly manner.

Conclusion

Water parks can meet people's needs for summer heat relief, leisure, and entertainment, allowing tourists to enjoy themselves in the splashing water. Water parks can be classified into large, medium, and small water parks by scale, and into indoor and outdoor types by venue type.

Water parks mainly include amusement facilities and basic facilities. The construction party focuses on amusement facilities and water systems, supporting basic facilities, and creating successful water parks through optimized design and reasonable organization.

Water parks are highly seasonal, mainly open in summer, with a relatively short operating time. Indoor parks can be open all year round, but the number of tourists in winter is much lower than in summer.
