With the continued rise in the popularity of commercialized culture, culture is no longer merely an embellishment but is gradually becoming a core element of commercial projects. It not only deepens the layers of content and enhances the consumer experience but also injects the project with emotional value and spiritual energy that transcends the material level, making commercial activities more meaningful and engaging. However, with increasing market saturation and ever-upgrading consumer demands, simple cultural symbols or superficial experiences are no longer enough to ignite consumers' sustained enthusiasm. People continue to seek deeper emotional connections and personalized experiences, which is the fertile ground for the emergence of the new era of entertainment commerce.

In the age of entertainment commerce, consumers are no longer passive recipients of products but active creators of experiences. They yearn to have fun and express themselves during the consumption process, pursuing moments that touch their hearts. Whether it's the thrilling experience of an immersive theater, the heroic dreams in video games, or the spiritual resonance at a music festival, entertainment commerce satisfies consumers' needs for stimulation, relaxation, and self-expression in diverse ways. In this new era, entertainment is not just a consumer product but a lifestyle and a reflection of personal values.

The definition of entertainment is not as we usually think

The essence of entertainment is far more complex and diverse than superficial phenomena; its definition far surpasses the simple "joy" or "relaxation" commonly understood by the public. Entertainment is, in fact, a broad concept encompassing the full spectrum of emotional experiences, including but not limited to joy, sadness, tension, fear, and even physical challenges and fatigue.

The core of entertainment lies in providing a unique experience that touches the heart and evokes strong emotional responses, whether positive or negative. For example, a drama with a heavy plot and suppressed emotions, while bringing viewers sadness and reflection, possesses profound entertainment value precisely because of this deep emotional resonance. Similarly, escape rooms create a tense and exciting atmosphere, allowing participants to experience a complex mix of fear and excitement during the puzzle-solving process—another form of entertainment, even though the tension involved is vastly different from everyday ease and pleasure. Furthermore, some sports competitions or high-intensity video games require players to invest a great deal of physical and mental energy. Although the process may be challenging and arduous, the sense of accomplishment and satisfaction upon completion are also important components of the entertainment experience. This type of entertainment emphasizes the inner joy and growth derived from overcoming difficulties and pushing one's limits.

Entertainment's indispensable role in human society stems from its ability to meet individuals' multifaceted psychological and social needs. In short, the essence of entertainment is to provide a platform for people to seek happiness, build social connections, unleash creativity, and foster personal growth. This concept encompasses a wide range of behaviors and activities, from watching movies and participating in sports to artistic creation; each form of entertainment reflects, to varying degrees, humanity's desire for rich life experiences.

Watching movies or plays not only provides temporary escapism, allowing viewers to immerse themselves in different stories and emotions and experience the lives of others, but also stimulates thought, broadens horizons, and, in some cases, promotes emotional healing and growth. Sporting events provide a space for competition and cooperation, where participants and spectators alike can experience the importance of teamwork, personal achievement, and physical health. Artistic creation, whether music, painting, or writing, is a direct expression of personal emotions and imagination; it not only promotes creativity but also deepens understanding of one's identity, enhancing self-confidence and self-efficacy.

The diversity of entertainment activities reflects the diversity of human needs. They not only provide fleeting joy and relaxation but, more importantly, promote social interaction, strengthen community cohesion, and provide a sense of belonging; stimulate creativity and encourage innovative thinking; and, by providing challenges and opportunities, promote the improvement of personal skills and the cultivation of psychological resilience. Therefore, in modern society, entertainment is not merely a filler for leisure time but an important driving force for personal development and social progress.

Into what categories can entertainment be divided?

The entertainment of physical commerce takes many forms, and the entertainment of shopping malls and commercial streets is far more than simply introducing a few entertainment businesses. Referring to the definition of RET睿意德 China Commercial Research Center, entertainment can be divided into the following four categories:

Passive Entertainment
Such as watching movies, TV series, and live programs. These activities do not require much audience participation but provide enjoyment through watching or listening.

Interactive Entertainment
Such as playing video games, participating in sports, and playing board games. This type of entertainment requires more active participation from the audience or participants.

Experiential Entertainment
Such as theme parks, museum exhibitions, and live concerts. These activities provide participants with an immersive experience, allowing them to directly experience the content of the entertainment.
Creative Entertainment
Such as painting, writing, and photography. These activities encourage individuals to express their creativity and ideas, and can also serve as a relaxing and enjoyable process.

What is the outstanding value of entertainment to commerce?

The concept of the world's earliest entertainment retail or entertainment shopping venues can be traced back to Shanghai, China, in the early 20th century. Shanghai's four major department stores—Sincere, Wing On, New New, and Da Xin—are considered the world's earliest commercial entities to integrate entertainment and leisure functions into their retail formats. These department stores introduced a series of entertainment and leisure elements in the early 20th century, such as rooftop gardens, cinemas, restaurants, dance halls, and amusement parks, which were considered very innovative at the time.

Shanghai "Dashijie" (The Great World), which opened in 1917, and Tianjin Quanyechang (Tianjin Department Store), built in 1928, can be regarded as representatives of entertainment-oriented commerce in China. Both hold important historical significance for their respective cities, as well as for commercial development and the era. Shanghai "Dashijie" was characterized by acrobatics, variety shows, and northern and southern opera and folk arts. The Dashijie Amusement Center was composed of four parts: "Amusement World," "Exhibition World," "Competition World," and "Gourmet World," offering eight series of amusement projects. Among them, the "Dashijie Arena" and Guinness Records Arena within "Competition World" attracted skilled performers from all over the country, and the 12 fun mirrors were also unique attractions for visitors, strollers, and experiencers at that time. Besides a dazzling array of goods, Tianjin Quanyechang also attracted people from all corners of the country with its famous "Eight Heavens," namely Tiangong Cinema, Tianhuajing Theater, Tianle Theater, Tiansheng Theater, Grand View Garden, Tianwei Ball Club, Tianlu Teahouse, and the rooftop garden Tianwaitian. Performances by famous Peking Opera actors at Tianhuajing Theater were often sold out day and night.

Early commerce leveraged entertainment content to create an "unmissable" attraction, not only drawing in customers but also transcending the retail scope to become a spokesperson for urban culture, fully demonstrating the natural complementary relationship between entertainment and commerce. Currently, although the forms of entertainment have undergone tremendous changes, its essential function of empowering commercial businesses has remained unchanged. In the next phase of commercial development in China, entertainment will continue to amplify its role, especially in the two key trends of experience and culture, injecting more powerful driving force into commercial projects.

Deepen the Experience

Through methods such as emotional resonance, immersive experiences, and personalized services, entertainment can create richer and deeper consumer experiences, allowing people to find joy, emotional support, and the embodiment of personal value within entertainment.

Entertainment activities can activate the brain's reward system, providing people with pleasurable sensations by releasing neurotransmitters like dopamine. This physiological positive feedback not only strengthens an individual's memory and fondness for entertainment experiences but also stimulates the desire to repeatedly participate in similar activities. For example, watching an engaging movie or playing an exciting game can provide a momentary thrill, and this thrill prompts people to seek more entertainment activities to achieve sustained satisfaction.

Entertainment content often carries strong emotional tones, capable of evoking emotional resonance in the audience. Whether it's moving moments in a movie or touching melodies in music, they can touch people's hearts, allowing them to form an emotional connection with the work. This emotional resonance deepens the layers and meaning of the experience, enabling people to find emotional comfort and support while enjoying entertainment.

Lighten Up Culture

Entertainment-oriented content can reduce cognitive load, making it easier for people to absorb information in a relaxed state. According to cognitive load theory, the human cognitive system has certain limitations when processing information. Entertainment content is usually presented in a simple and direct manner, reducing cognitive load, allowing people to acquire new knowledge under low pressure, making it easier to remember and understand. In addition, emotional resonance is also a key factor. Entertainment works can stimulate positive emotional reactions, such as happiness and excitement, and these positive emotions can increase people's attention and engagement. Psychological research shows that when we are in a positive emotional state, we are more inclined to accept new ideas and information. Therefore, culturally disseminated content designed with entertainment can more easily arouse the audience's interest and resonance.

Storytelling effects and multimodal processing are also important mechanisms in entertainment-oriented design. Humans are inherently drawn to stories, and a narrative approach can help people better understand and remember information. Entertainment works are often presented in the form of stories, leveraging the power of narrative to simplify complex cultural concepts into easily understandable plots. Such stories can spark the audience's curiosity and desire for exploration, allowing them to naturally absorb cultural knowledge while enjoying the story. Simultaneously, entertainment works typically incorporate rich audiovisual elements, and these multi-sensory stimuli help deepen the audience's memory impressions, making the transmission of cultural information more effective. This multimodal processing method not only enhances the attractiveness of information but also strengthens the audience's memory and comprehension abilities.

Accelerate Socialization

Entertainment-oriented scenes and designs provide people with common experiences and topics, which form the basis of social interaction. Entertainment activities such as concerts and movie screenings can serve as starting points for communication, giving strangers a common language. This shared experience helps break down social barriers, allowing people to quickly bridge distances in a relaxed and pleasant atmosphere. Furthermore, entertainment activities often trigger emotional resonance. By sharing emotional experiences, participants can establish emotional connections. This emotional resonance not only deepens mutual understanding but also fosters trust and intimacy, contributing to the rapid formation of friendships and social networks.

Entertainment-oriented scene design itself acts as a social catalyst, fostering communication and interaction among people, thereby enhancing social efficiency. Entertainment activities are typically designed to be more open and interactive, providing more opportunities for people to communicate. For instance, gaming events, theme parties, etc., encourage interaction among participants. This design itself is a social catalyst that can facilitate communication and interaction among people, improving social efficiency. Furthermore, entertainment activities are often closely linked to specific cultures or subcultures, and participating in these activities can help people find their communities and establish a sense of identity. This sense of belonging contributes to the formation of stable social relationships and promotes broader social connections.

Enhance Radiating Power

Entertainment activities offer a haven from daily stress and anxiety, becoming an ideal destination for people seeking emotional regulation and mental relaxation. It is this desire for spiritual comfort that motivates the public to step out of their comfort zones and personally visit places that offer entertainment.

Humanity's instinctive pursuit of novel experiences perfectly aligns with the innovative concepts of entertainment-oriented businesses. New and unique entertainment projects not only satisfy public curiosity but also ignite a passion for exploring the unknown and challenging oneself. This yearning for new things drives people to overcome distance limitations, even if the journey is long, they are happy to personally experience this uniqueness.

The experiential nature and emotional connection of entertainment activities create unforgettable memories, fostering a strong yearning for good times. This intrinsic emotional resonance encourages consumers to desire repeat visits, as they long to relive that unique joy and satisfaction. At the same time, entertainment activities are often rooted in specific cultural backgrounds or communities. Participation not only allows individuals to feel belonging and recognition but also deepens personal identity and social connections through diverse cultural exchanges.

Conclusion

In this era of material abundance, people increasingly value experiences that touch the soul and enrich the inner world. Entertainment businesses, by providing personalized and immersive experiences, satisfy this deep psychological need and also reflect the postmodern pursuit of meaning, value, and happiness. The transition from cultural business to the new era of entertainment business is not just a shift in trend but a leap in social and cultural paradigms. It calls us to rethink the essence and role of entertainment, encouraging us, while enjoying entertainment, to also delve into its cultural implications and social functions, thereby fostering a more inclusive, creative, and humanistic future society.
