The report points out that young people prefer diversified, branded, and lightweight performing arts forms, especially immersive experiences and social scenarios. The survey shows that Generation Z is willing to pay for small to medium-sized distinctive performances costing 100-300 yuan; they pursue sensory and cognitive experiences, as well as the combination of trendy and traditional culture. The report emphasizes the importance of new media in the dissemination of performing arts information, with young people mainly obtaining performing arts information through platforms such as Xiaohongshu and Douyin. Young people prefer immersive and highly interactive performing arts activities, such as live houses and music festivals. They tend to participate in performing arts activities with friends or family, seeking a platform for social interaction and release. In terms of performing arts consumption, young people show distinct layered characteristics, with most participating once per quarter, and having clear interests and expectations for performing arts content. They have high requirements for the convenience of transportation to performing arts venues, the orderly organization of activities, and the richness of formats.

New Performing Arts Spaces: How can spaces "break walls"?

1. Commercial complexes make micro-performances more accessible
In the past, traditional theaters typically stood independently in streets and alleys, rarely appearing in shopping malls; nowadays, shopping malls are no longer merely shopping entities, but complexes for urban leisure consumption for residents. Carrying more and more cultural functions, leveraging the user traffic inherent to commercial complexes can well empower the development of performing arts spaces. For example, Guangzhou Zhengjia Plaza built a grand theater on the 7th floor, and Guangzhou Book Center introduced Guangmang enlightening. on the 6th floor.

2. Micro-performing arts spaces cluster and thrive
Most performing arts spaces used to be dispersed as single entities in various corners of the city, unable to form a certain consumption atmosphere. As performing arts spaces gradually become popular destinations, cities are also successively creating "cultural centers," forming a cluster of high-quality cultural content and brands. For example, Suzhou Suzhou Arts Performing Arts Cultural Cluster Area transformed and upgraded in 2022 and now encompasses 8 theaters, including Guofeng Theater, Parent-Child Micro Theater, Youth Theater, Infant and Toddler Theater, Mystery Theater, and Magic Theater.

New Performing Arts Spaces: How can content "break out"?

1. "Segmented precision marketing" allows performing arts content to flourish
Even good wine fears deep alleys? High-quality performing arts content requires "vertical" dissemination. Given that segmented culture is increasingly popular among young people, performing arts is an important branch, and it can even be further subdivided into musicals, physical theater, object theater, parent-child theater, comedy, etc. For example, through the promotion of performing arts content on new media platforms like Xiaohongshu, it can drive the exploration of circles, form precise communities, promote social interaction among like-minded individuals and user fission, and also establish online and offline interactive connections.

2. Festivals and exhibitions promote performing arts IP dissemination
On one hand, by leveraging festive activities of cultural, commercial, and tourism complexes, performing arts content can be thematized. For instance, Guangzhou VLAB Creative Park hosted its first "Encounter" Community Drama Life Festival, which gathered many theater managers, bringing high-quality performing content and brands hidden in Guangzhou and its surroundings to the public. On the other hand, focusing on the performing arts industry through exhibition models builds exchange platforms. For example, Macau hosted its first International Comedy Festival in March 2024, calling for global attention to the development of "comedy"; there is also the Wuzhen Theater Festival, held for ten consecutive years, which has become an annual grand event for performing arts professionals.

New Performing Arts Spaces: More Than Just a Stage - Experience is King, Content is Core

1. Horizontally expand supporting facilities, vertically extend the industrial chain
Horizontally, independent theaters can embrace surrounding resources with an open mind to extend supporting experiences, or add secondary sales like catering and cultural and creative products themselves, enhancing user attraction and increasing revenue sources.

Vertically, traditional media platforms and creative groups, such as Damai and Kaixin Mahua, possess significant brand influence. In the past, one end connected users, the other connected content; now they can try to extend the industrial chain, forming a connection of upstream and downstream resources. Create offline spaces based on user profiles and feedback. Discover and cultivate excellent content creators, similar to how Trip.com is building Trip.com Farms, and Bilibili is creating ACG-themed stores in other industries. Now Damai is also Longfusi, Beijing completed the Damai New Space, and Kaixin Mahua collaborated with Shisanyue Culture in Foshan to create an exclusive theater.

2. Encourage the conversion and application of youth-oriented content in micro-performing arts spaces
Under policy guidance, "new performing arts spaces" are flourishing nationwide, and it seems every space can become a "theater." Whether for public welfare or commercial purposes, space operators not only need content logic but also market logic and promotion logic, requiring comprehensive consideration of content selection, audience insights, and provision of supporting facilities. Currently, many performing arts spaces in the market face issues of outdated content and unsustainable operations, and the key to sustainable spaces lies in sustainable content. From the expectations of the young demographic surveyed this time, the creation of performing arts content requires the participation of young people—by supporting and incubating some performing arts spaces to be open as experimental stages for creative drama, allowing young people to step out of campus rehearsal rooms. This also brings a continuous flow of vitality to performing arts spaces.

New Creative Content
"Trendy" combined with traditional culture: Newly created performance products delve deeper into traditional culture while keeping up with fashion trends, making use of popular elements for integrated expression, conveying modern aesthetics and philosophical thinking.

II. Heart-Stirring Performances Across Mountains and Seas

For a heart-stirring performance, over 40% of young people are willing to watch performances within the city cluster, and over 30% can watch a performance across provinces or even inter-provincially. IV. Immersive Trendy Play Styles Are More Popular

Young people need platforms for socializing and releasing stress. Compared to traditional listening to plays and taking photos, they prefer interactive and immersive performances. This generation of young people not only plays well, but also plays with passion. From the types of activities they like, from the passion of livehouses, to the revelry of music festivals, to small-scale immersive performances and the mysterious charm of magic and acrobatics, they enjoy it all.

V. Traveling Together, Friends and Companions Make It Fun

Is it traveling together or traveling with companions? Overall, friends, family, and companions make traveling together less lonely.

VI. Immersive Performances Are Popular, Traditional Performances Are Being Pushed Aside

Young people's understanding and needs for tourism performances have changed compared to the traditional ones. Young people are no longer traditional audiences; they are keen to become NPCs, deeply participating and enjoying immersive interactive experiences, which also shows that young people have a stronger desire for co-creation and participation. This explains why young people today prefer livehouses and immersive micro-performances and less often choose large-scale comprehensive real-scene performances.

VII. Performance Seasonality, Young People Are Both Enthusiastic and Cautious

The frequency of once per quarter occupies the high ground, followed by once a year. The frequency of monthly and weekly is slightly less. Overall, young people's performance consumption is clearly stratified and has growth potential.

VIII. Tight Wallets Look for Discounts, Young People Seek Good Shows

More than half of young people believe that the main factor affecting their participation in performances is "limited budget, poor cost performance," and about 30% believe that their interest in tourism performances is not high, there are few performance projects, and the quality of the projects is not good enough.
