To further promote the deep integration and innovative development of digital technology and the tourism industry, create new digital cultural tourism products, formats, and scenarios, and enhance the new driving force of the cultural tourism economy, in August this year, the Ministry of Culture and Tourism announced the first batch of national pilot projects for the cultivation of new immersive experience spaces in smart tourism. The 24 pilot projects rely on tourist attractions, resorts, leisure streets, industrial heritage, museums, and other venues or related spaces. They utilize digital technologies such as augmented reality, virtual reality, and artificial intelligence, and integrate cultural creativity elements. Through the integration of culture and tourism and the combination of virtual and real, they allow tourists to deeply participate in and interact with the experience, forming new tourism products and consumption scenarios.
Policy Guidance
Accelerating the cultivation and development of new products, formats, and scenarios
"The booming development of internet technology, virtual reality technology, light and shadow technology, and digital technology have made immersive cultural tourism possible. At the same time, immersive cultural tourism projects can not only exist as incremental content but also revitalize existing resources in new ways. In addition to technological advancements, content integration, and depth of experience, the development background of immersive cultural tourism also includes policy promotion and cost constraints." Zeng Bowei, director of the China Tourism Economy and Policy Research Center of Beijing Union University and secretary-general of the China Tourism Association's Leisure and Vacation Branch, said.
From 2014 to the present, the State Council has successively issued documents such as "Several Opinions on Promoting the Reform and Development of the Tourism Industry," the "13th Five-Year Plan for Tourism Development," and the "14th Five-Year Plan for Tourism Development," proposing the construction of a number of national smart tourism cities, smart tourism scenic areas, smart tourism enterprises, and smart tourism villages, the creation of a number of smart tourism cities, scenic areas, resorts, and tourist streets, the cultivation of a number of innovative smart tourism enterprises and key projects, and the development of digital experience products, and the development of new tourism services such as immersive interactive experiences, virtual displays, and smart guides.
Under the guidance and promotion of various policy measures, smart tourism has become an indispensable part of the development of China's tourism industry.
The "14th Five-Year Plan for Tourism Development" clearly proposes accelerating the promotion of smart tourism characterized by digitalization, networking, and intelligence, deepening "Internet + Tourism," and expanding the application of new technologies and scenarios. This is the first time that the country has identified "expanding the application of new technology scenarios" as a direction for the construction of smart tourism.
The Resource Development Department of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism has implemented the National Smart Tourism Construction Project in depth, jointly issued the "Smart Tourism Scenario Application Guide (Trial)" with the Social Development Department of the National Development and Reform Commission, jointly issued the "Notice on Strengthening the Collaborative Innovation and Development of 5G+ Smart Tourism" with the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, organized the collection of typical cases of smart tourism, launched the selection of innovative smart tourism enterprises and projects, and carried out the recommendation and selection of new immersive experience spaces in smart tourism and pilot cultivation work, further clarifying the direction for the development of immersive cultural tourism.
"Among the 24 pilot projects announced this time, there are 4 museums and libraries, 5 leisure streets, 3 theme parks, 7 tourist attractions, 3 tourist resorts, and 2 industrial parks. These products of the deep integration of culture and tourism empowered by smart tourism, through the organic integration of digital technology and cultural and tourism spaces, have achieved a gorgeous upgrade from old stories to new content, from old places to new scenarios, from old resources to new products, and from old products to new formats, effectively promoting the "activation" of rich cultural and tourism resources." A relevant person in charge of the Resource Development Department of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism said that the national new immersive experience spaces in smart tourism have positive significance for promoting urban renewal, cultivating new "culture + tourism" products, extending the development radius, driving capacity, and radiation space of cultural and tourism formats and products. In the future, we will firmly grasp the important opportunity for the deep integration and development of the digital economy and the cultural and tourism economy, make full use of the power of science and technology, accelerate the cultivation and development of new smart tourism products, formats, and scenarios, and make the cultural relics collected in museums, the heritage displayed on the vast land, and the words written in ancient books "move," allowing people to experience the new charm of "technology + culture" in tourism.
Market Reaction
Immersive Experiences Drive New Cultural and Tourism Consumption
Since the beginning of this year, China's cultural and tourism market has accelerated its recovery. The creation of new smart tourism products and scenarios has injected new impetus into the recovery and expansion of cultural and tourism consumption, becoming a new economic growth point in the cultural and tourism market. According to statistics, during this summer, the consumption of 24 national new immersive experience spaces in smart tourism increased by more than 200% year-on-year, with total revenue exceeding 100 million yuan and 3 million consumer visits.
Since its opening at the end of last year, the teamLab Borderless art space has received approximately 400,000 visitors and generated revenue exceeding 80 million yuan. During the Spring Festival alone, it received 17,000 visitors, and the average daily number of visitors during the summer vacation reached 3,000. As a permanent digital art space, teamLab not only showcases more than 40 digital art works that are global premieres and Asian premieres, but also creatively develops a series of derivative digital art spaces such as an immersive teahouse, an art restaurant, and a painting factory. Wang Dong, CEO of Guangyu Light and general manager of teamLab Borderless art space, introduced that digital technology plays an important role in this space. For example, workstations provide tools for digital creation and editing for the design, production, and debugging of artworks; the use of laser projectors can project artworks onto various complex spatial surfaces; and sensor devices are used to capture the movements of the audience or changes in the environment, enabling interaction between the audience and the artworks.
Tourist Wan Cheng said after experiencing it: "The works created in teamLab's Beijing exhibition space have no physical boundaries, creating a super immersive experience."
As the first immersive Tang Dynasty market culture and life street in the country, since its opening, the Chang'an Twelve Hours themed street has received an average of 7,000 visitors per day, a cumulative number of visitors exceeding 1 million, and a total online exposure of 7.5 billion times. With its outstanding achievements, the Chang'an Twelve Hours themed street has boosted the confidence of the cultural tourism industry and the market enthusiasm of Xi'an's cultural tourism economy.
The street integrates the TV series "The Twelve Hours of Chang'an" IP and Tang Dynasty cultural elements into 24,000 square meters of commercial space, creating a new consumption scene that combines Tang Dynasty space exploration, Tang Dynasty street life experience, themed immersive interaction, Tang Dynasty music and dance performances, and cultural social leisure, recreating the unique charm of the Tang Dynasty capital Chang'an. Lu Tao, deputy secretary of the Party Committee and general manager of Shaanxi Cultural Investment Group, introduced that the Chang'an Twelve Hours themed street follows the principles of cultural reproduction, economic release, and immersive experience in its development. The street uses performing arts, scenes, NPC interaction, and a visual operation management platform built using the Internet of Things, mobile internet, artificial intelligence, and big data to achieve intelligent and visual management.
The emergence of immersive experience spaces means that tourist attractions are no longer just areas for viewing natural landscapes, historical sites, and immovable cultural relics, but have also become creative spaces for in-depth experiences and new commercial formats, such as travel photography, role-playing, and script killing, becoming popular consumption business districts and platform entrances. Zhang Lingyun, professor at Beijing International Studies University and executive editor of Tourism Journal, said.
