Parks are indispensable places for citizens' leisure, entertainment, gatherings, fitness, dancing, and other spiritual and cultural life. As an important means of enhancing citizens' night-time leisure experience, how should park lighting be designed to create a comfortable night-time light environment?

Precise Matching of "Scene-Based City Building" and Regional Culture

Scene-based city building is an important concept formed by combining scene theory innovation in the process of Chengdu's park city construction practice in recent years. "Park city" and "scene-based city building" have the same logical starting point—"people." Essentially, it revolves around people's needs, transforming urban development from "space construction" based on "capital + land" to "scene creation" based on "people + space." It emphasizes using public spaces as a carrier, coordinating multi-dimensional elements such as landscape, business formats, and activities to comprehensively build diverse urban scenes.

Each city has different regional characteristics and cultural accumulation. Each park, based on its location and theme, represents different regional cultures. Therefore, when designing the corresponding park night lighting, we should first fully understand the regional culture and extract these elements to combine with the lighting design. Elements representing cultural characteristics in the park, such as sculptures, installations, and murals, should be artistically expressed to elevate the function and effect of park lighting.

Precise Matching of "Scene-Based City Building" and Regional Culture

In park lighting, the consideration of lighting functions is essential, primarily "functional lighting" and "landscape lighting."

"Functional lighting" includes road lighting, lighting for entertainment, fitness, and rest facilities, ensuring people feel safe and comfortable at night whether walking in the park or using these facilities, highlighting humanistic care. "Landscape lighting" makes reasonable use of rockeries, water bodies, greenery, pavilions, bridges, and especially pavilions and towers, creating corresponding outline lighting to highlight them at night, becoming the focal points of the park and effectively depicting a beautiful landscape painting at night.

However, compared to the constantly improving demand for nighttime consumption, the creation of urban night scenes in most regions of China is still in its early stages of development. Common problems include: (1) Most are only ordinary bright lighting, focusing on "building scenes" and ignoring "gathering people"; (2) Insufficient functional integration, lacking the integration of new economy, new consumption, and new scenes; (3) Significant homogenization of landscapes and business formats, lacking regional characteristics.

Scene-Based Creation of Urban Night Scenes

Based on the core concept of scene-based city building, integrating spatial characteristics, main functions, main groups, and cultural characteristics, three scene modes are identified in urban night scene creation: tourism consumption, cultural activities, and a smart future. The strategies for constructing these scenes are further explored, bringing comprehensive landscape value enhancement to urban night scene creation in multiple dimensions such as form, business formats, and cultural forms.

Immersive Scene Design

Creating an immersive consumer experience focuses on using the story and immersion of the scene, leveraging sensory and cognitive experiences, and using light and shadow to tell colorful nighttime stories, allowing consumers to fully immerse themselves, extending consumption time, and driving peripheral, secondary, and related consumption.

Xi'an's Datang Everbright City became a sensation due to its exquisite night tour. Surrounding Tang culture-themed landscape nodes, incorporating interactive experiences, and combining five major industries—night sightseeing, cultural leisure, performing arts, specialty dining, and shopping and entertainment—created a thrilling and diverse immersive night tour route, immersing people in the atmosphere of Tang culture and creating a "Tang Dynasty dream."

01 Cultural Activity Scenes

Integrating local space and culture, incorporating diverse activity scenes, and constructing nighttime cultural activity scenes. Through cultural memories and unique cultural experiences under the light and shadow, the cultural connotation of the city is highlighted, reshaping people's nighttime lifestyle.

Thematized and Plot-Driven Scene Design

Constructing unique themes and cultural IPs for nighttime spaces is the core of forming the unique selling points and differentiated characteristics of urban night scenes. A distinct cultural theme provides visitors with a unique environment, while a storyline developed around the theme highlights thematic information, allowing visitors to closely connect with the scene along the storyline's development during the night tour, combining scenery, lighting, and performances to create an immersive cultural experience.

Osaka's scenic area invited a famous multimedia team to plan a unique immersive night park, "SAKUYA LUMINA," using the entire Osaka Castle Park as a stage. With Akiyo, a girl from Akihabara in the future, as the protagonist, her adventures with her elf companions connect the entire night tour activity. The story consists of 11 chapters, drawing inspiration from traditional Japanese culture and emphasizing cultural revitalization.

Localization of Design Elements

The application of cultural resources is the core of creating a sense of place and the key to shaping the characteristics of night scenes. Chengdu has abundant current resources and cultural connotations. How to apply historical and cultural elements to the scenes of nighttime spaces and highlight the uniqueness and regional characteristics of nighttime spaces is an important issue.

Chengdu's "Night Tour of Jinjiang" project uses the "Jinjiang Story Scroll" as the main line and poetic scenes as prototypes, from Du Fu's "The boat docks at Dongwu, ten thousand miles away," to Lu You's "The brocade-weaving river is rare in the world." Through the night tour project and the combination of holographic projection, light shows, fireworks shows, and melodious ancient music, an atmosphere of "walking in a painting" is created.

02 Smart Future Scenes

The biggest difference between urban night scene creation and daytime is that the innovative application of modern light and shadow technology provides more imagination for scene creation. A smart future scene is constructed through the intelligent and interactive nature of lighting design.

Intelligent Lighting Design

Using various technical means such as sound, light, electricity, virtual reality, 3D animation, and environmental effects in urban night scene creation, and through the creation of immersive experience products and CG digital content production, the scene can be innovatively transformed from "white" to "black," creating scenes characterized by "real-time interaction" and "immersive experience," increasing the diversity of experiences.

Interactive Lighting Design

Creating nighttime tourism consumption scenarios requires breaking away from traditional concepts of nighttime sightseeing and retail. It should start by meeting consumers' diverse and high-quality consumption needs, integrating and extending all business formats, connecting chains of different consumption elements and scenarios, and smoothing the interconnectivity of elements such as "food, accommodation, transportation, tourism, shopping, and entertainment."

In recent years, interactive lighting installations have become increasingly prevalent in public spaces. As mentioned earlier, Osaka Castle Park, themed around a futuristic girl's adventure story, utilizes numerous interactive lighting designs to create a science fiction adventure nighttime scene, enhancing the participation and enjoyment of the entire nighttime tour.

Every night, when all is quiet, the stones, big and small, come alive, performing a lively little theatrical show!

Under each smiling tree is a photo booth that displays visitors' captured smiles on an interactive device!

Conclusion

Urban nightscape creation is not only a crucial window for showcasing a city's image but also a matter of great importance to urban development. Constructing a "people-oriented" urban nightscape creation model using scenario theory is of great practical significance in improving the quality of the urban living environment.
