The Jiaozi Pedestrian Bridge is located in the heart of the Chengdu Jiaozi Financial Headquarters Business District. As Chengdu's modern financial and business center, the district is positioned to be a world-class park city commercial district model.



Floating Park


How will this pedestrian bridge, located in Chengdu's Jiaozi Financial District, cross the Jinjiang River? Is it a bridge or a park? The starting point of the design is to constantly raise questions. First, let's return to the observation of the city's structure: The Jinjiang River flows from north to south, dividing the Jiaozi Financial Business District into two long rectangular blocks, east and west. The 2.5-kilometer-long Jiaozi green belt, extending in the east-west direction, is divided into two sections by the Jinjiang River, becoming parks facing each other across the river. The intersection of the Jinjiang River and the central green belt forms a natural breakpoint in the urban space, requiring a strong connection. The construction of a pedestrian bridge will not only connect the two banks, achieving the interconnection of the city's pedestrian system, but will also connect the Jiaozi green belt as one, achieving a "blue-green confluence" with the river.

The Jiaozi green belt is approximately 150 meters wide. As the part of the green belt that crosses the river, the bridge deck cannot be too narrow; otherwise, it will be difficult to form a continuous green axis. However, if a wide cross-section is adopted, it will inevitably cover the river channel and cast a large area of negative shadows. Therefore, we envisioned a "porous" bridge, allowing sunlight to penetrate the gaps in the bridge deck to illuminate the water surface.

Through a combination of unit addition and hole subtraction, the design ultimately achieved a collection form of "lotus bridge." Multiple cantilevered "lotus leaf" units achieve sufficient coverage width, while gaps are left between the discs, allowing sunlight, wind, rain, and sightlines to pass through, allowing the artificial bridge and the natural river to breathe in unison. Nine differently sized disc units are similar in shape but different in structure, ranging in area from 300 to 1600 ㎡. Trees are planted on them, connecting with the riverside green space to form a floating park suspended above the Jinjiang River. Walking among them, one experiences "lotus steps." The bridge's curves are dynamic and the combination of solid and void is interesting. The bridge deck and its reflection complement each other, and each cantilevered arc balcony becomes an interface for people to interact with the river.

Diverse Scenes


This is a hybrid of bridge and park, 498 meters long, including approach bridges spanning the east and west municipal roads, a main bridge spanning a 120-meter-wide river section, and an existing north-south waterfront greenway that intersects it vertically. To achieve pedestrian connectivity and barrier-free access, the walkway system is divided into three elevation systems: the upper level crossing the river and municipal roads, the middle level of the municipal roads, and the lower level of the riverbank greenway. The different levels are connected by ramps, stairs, and elevators. The three-dimensional transportation and layered landscaping are reminiscent of the ancient Hanging Gardens of Babylon, paying tribute to the pioneers of ancient construction and recreating the landscape dream of "people walking in the air."

Chengdu life is open and leisurely, welcoming people's participation at all times. The nine disc units are both a whole and nine relatively independent activity scenes. The water bar under the lotus leaf pavilion, where one can drink and enjoy the breeze, creates a moving consumption scene. A 24-hour unmanned library provides a space for nearby communities to rest and read. The circular theater follows the slope of the riverbank and is a venue for outdoor performances; the colorful water show, a combination of fountains and colorful glass, is a colorful wonderland for children to play. In the water garden, children can lie or sit and chase the water, providing multiple experiences of "seeing, hearing, and touching" the water. The middle section of the bridge deck is hollowed out into a ring, making it easy for people to lie on the opening and overlook the river surface. Water curtains are arranged around the ring, and a light and shadow show is activated at night, becoming a popular spot for citizens to take photos and check in.

Construction Details


The bridge's structural form draws inspiration from the stems of growing lotus leaves, using an irregular two-way rigid frame system. The large and small gaps between the lotus leaves ensure stability while reducing the overall weight of the structure. The bridge deck paving uses ER colored calcined ceramsite, enhancing the overall integrity of the paving while avoiding ground cracking caused by the thermal expansion and contraction of the bridge's steel structure.

46 trees are planted on the bridge deck, arranged in accordance with the structural requirements of the cantilever structure. The wide tree crowns ensure the continuity of greenery, allowing the Jiaozi green belt ecology to cross the river. Colorful native tree species such as Quercus fabri, Acer palmatum, Liquidambar formosana, Sapium sebiferum, and Pistacia chinensis enrich the seasonal changes of the bridge park, with lush greenery in spring and summer and vibrant colors in autumn.

Rainbows connect the dual dimensions of science and aesthetics, regarded as a bridge between natural phenomena and human emotions. Is it possible to recreate the natural rainbow scene on the bridge? Through the analysis of the sun's angle, we simulate the conditions for rainbow formation, using mist spraying to form a water curtain, refracting sunlight at specific times to create a 30m-wide artificial rainbow. "Encountering a rainbow" becomes a point of empathy with the public, injecting a new plot into the ancient type of "bridge."
