Recently, the official released the construction project planning land verification and confirmation letter for the Cao E Temple historical and cultural street area restoration and transformation construction project, which means that this much-anticipated street area has met the conditions for completion and is getting closer to us.
The Cao E Historical and Cultural Street Area project is located in the core area of the Xiao De Cultural Town, aiming to create "the best area to promote Shangyu's filial piety culture and a livable town that showcases the charm of the city's southern cultural tourism."
The total investment of the project is 590 million yuan, with a total land area of about 8.68 hectares. The newly built building area is about 38,600 square meters (including 26,600 square meters above ground and 12,000 square meters of basement), the preserved and repaired building area is about 16,600 square meters, the landscape area is about 57,000 square meters, and the total usable commercial building area is about 34,000 square meters.
The name "E'li" originates from the Cao E Temple within the street area. The Cao E Temple was built to commemorate the filial daughter Cao E. Built in the Eastern Han Dynasty, it became famous in the Wei and Jin Dynasties, flourished in the Tang and Song Dynasties, prospered in the Ming and Qing Dynasties, and continues to exist today. It is known as the "No. 1 Temple in the South" and is the highlight of the old Cao E historical and cultural area. The Thirteen Alleys inherit and condense the essence of the local culture of old Cao E, and will recreate the past scene of "nine wells, thirteen alleys, and ten bridges with crisscrossing water" through the integration of alley culture and commercial systems.
Through the creation of four characteristic groups, Cao E Li and Thirteen Alleys will bring tourists different sightseeing experiences, from cultural vacations to urban life, from refined life to waterfront leisure, fully meeting the multi-level needs of surrounding residents, city tourists, Gen Z, and cultural experience seekers.

Stepping into Cao Hui Alley, it's like traveling through a time tunnel, back to the ancient times when carriages were slow and the local accent remained unchanged.
Han and Tang Dynasty Style
Turning the corner, Xu Family Alley presents a scene of Han and Tang Dynasty style. The poems and songs presented using ancient Yue bronze materials can be chanted, recited, touched, and felt, adding a touch of romance and poetry to the alley.
Contentment and Self-Reflection
Continuing forward, Chengxin Temple Alley becomes a place for contentment and self-reflection. Walking among the bas-relief silhouettes, one can find a place for Zen meditation, with the ancient bell sounds seeming to echo in one's ears.
The following Jar Alley is full of memories of old Cao E. In the old jar-shaped artworks is a miniature of the jar-making process. Jars and pots not only store wine, grains, and oil, but also contain the flavors of life and preserve the ingenuity of old Cao E.
Chai Chuan Alley is a space for tourists to rest. The daily life of the past has not disappeared, but has become folk legends in the alley, existing alongside Cao E.
Four Seasons and Eight Festivals
After a short rest, we come to Miao Alley. The lifelike Cao E Temple Fair bas-reliefs present the entire temple fair scene in three dimensions before the tourists. The Cao E Temple by the river guards the history, and the annual fair in front of the temple is filled with the atmosphere of human life.
Jing Alley has a horizontally placed well-shaped artwork that allows tourists to drink directly. The sound of dripping water in the well is not only the homesickness of filial piety, but also a tribute to cherishing the source of water.
Calligraphy and Bamboo Art
Walking into Tai Zhu Alley, the bamboo's openwork design allows light to pass through, giving a mysterious and dreamy feeling. Using bamboo as a pen, it writes the elegant landscape of Shangyu, and using bamboo as a sleeve, it dances the exquisite intangible cultural heritage of Cao E.
Millennial Secret Mountain
The sculpture in Fenggang Alley reflects the undulating peaks and magnificent momentum of the mountain, condensed in this artwork. The celadon sculpture texture on the surface releases the breath and power of nature. The alley reflects the Phoenix Mountain, like the secret of Yue kiln celadon, like the green of a thousand peaks.
Rise and Fall of Industries
Coming to Tiao Chai Alley, the firewood carriers in the alley carry the hundreds of industries of Cao E on their shoulders, stepping over the long river of history for thousands of years. Today's people have taken over their "burden" and are still telling stories of life in the alley.
Transportation in All Directions
Tuo Chuan Alley is the necessary passage connecting the Xiao Cao Canal and the Cao E River. The past events of the alley where tugboats passed through the dam are like shadow puppets, printed in the window of time. The respect and remembrance of this arduous tradition is a preservation and inheritance of historical culture.
Wu Family Gate Alley is a microcosm of multiculturalism. On the screen wall are the daily life scenes of old Cao E, Wu's gate, boats by the dam, thousands of jobs, and countless people. The exchange and tolerance of different cultures converge here.
As the end of Cao E Li and Thirteen Alleys, Si Alley exudes a solemn historical atmosphere. The hundreds of miles of Xiao Cao Canal are open, and the inspection and patrol are reflected in the lights. The past has gone with the wind, but the Si Hall still remains in the city.
