A small bamboo shoot boosted an entire village. In 2023, Daoming Town's Zhuyi Village bamboo industry achieved a production value of 70.2 million yuan, attracting 1.286 million tourists and generating 1.255 billion yuan in comprehensive tourism revenue. They adopted a "company + designer alliance + rural planner + villager" collaborative model, working with well-known domestic and international design institutions to create a characteristic industrial cluster centered on the "bamboo industry" IP. They transformed from simple bamboo product processing to a bamboo economy focusing on bamboo research and learning, bamboo cultural creativity, and bamboo decoration, developing over 3,000 types of bamboo-woven tourism products.

Zhuyi Village's Development Model

Zhuyi Village is located in Daoming Town, Chongzhou City, Sichuan Province, the birthplace of China's intangible cultural heritage bamboo weaving. It is situated in the core demonstration area of Chongzhou's "Celestial Granary" and is over 50 kilometers from the city center. It has 86 households.

Actually, "Zhuyi Village" is not an administrative village, but a naturally formed cluster of settlements in groups 9, 11, and 13 of Longhuang Village. It is the core area of the national intangible cultural heritage representative project and national geographical indication protected product—"Daoming Bamboo Weaving." In 2022, Longhuang Village was officially renamed "Zhuyi Village."

First, find a suitable "model" for rural development

Since 2016, Zhuyi Village has implemented the national "Rural Revitalization" strategy and begun exploring the "three rights separation" of homesteads. Following the "company + designer alliance + rural planner + villager" collaborative model, it began planning, designing, and construction, allowing art to illuminate the countryside and using culture to sustain the future.

This involves a question: How should land be utilized? Zhuyi Village did it this way:
(1) Regarding land, villagers transfer land to a land cooperative, which then signs a lease agreement with the company. Villagers receive rent and dividends;

(2) Regarding houses, villagers rent their houses to the company, which pays rent to the villagers according to the area;

(3) Regarding labor, security guards, sanitation workers, and some cooks and waiters are hired from local villagers.

Driven by the Zhuyi Village project, the original inhabitants began to use their idle space for business. The development of the forest cluster has led to increased income and wealth for all villagers.

Second, cultivate the "talent" for rural development

Zhuyi Village has sorted out its cultural lineage, identifying artists with traditional skills such as bamboo weaving, cuisine, and traditional handicrafts—all invaluable resources for rural development.

To date, Zhuyi Village has 62 intangible cultural heritage bamboo weaving inheritors, including 1 national-level, 3 provincial-level, 4 Chengdu-level, and 54 Chongzhou-level inheritors. It also has 100 bamboo weaving artists and over 4,000 employees.

In addition, the gathering of professional talent was the first step for Zhuyi Village to enter the public eye
Zhuyi Village held an overseas artist residency program. Artists from 6 countries, including the United States, Spain, and the Netherlands, lived in Zhuyi Village for study and design. Ultimately, "Bamboo Forest" became a textbook-level work, attracting the attention of the architecture industry and attracting a large number of architectural talents.

After completing the "Bamboo Forest" project, the local area began recruiting a certain number of "new villagers," bringing in over 100 "new villagers," including famous young poets and traditional Chinese learning teachers. Cultural exchange enhanced Zhuyi Village's artistic experience and spread the essence of traditional Chinese culture, leading to spontaneous publicity from all levels of society.

With the arrival of new villagers and cultural and creative designers, traditional artisans were guided to upgrade their industries, forming the Daoming bamboo weaving industry chain. The village has heritage bases such as the Yang Longmei Studio, Ding Zhizhu Studio, and Hongmei Bamboo Weaving, as well as venues such as intangible cultural heritage workshops, intangible cultural heritage learning centers, and intangible cultural heritage research and learning bases.

Zhuyi Village has successively won numerous honors, including the National AAAA-level Tourist Scenic Area, National Key Village for Rural Tourism, and Sichuan's first batch of Tianfu Tourism Famous Villages. It has become a model for the integrated development of rural agriculture, commerce, culture, tourism, and sports in Chengdu, and for rural tourism.

Design Illuminates the Future of the Countryside

Those who have been to Zhuyi Village know that its architecture is full of artistic and rural aesthetic sensibility. In fact, the direction was set from the beginning of the planning and design.

1. Using "design to illuminate the future of the countryside" as a starting point, the rural aesthetic expression is implemented according to the principles of minimal demolition and reconstruction, no mountain excavation or landfilling, no excessive design, no hasty pursuit of foreign styles, and the preservation of the original ecology, original inhabitants, original houses, and original materials.

2. Focus on the organic integration of local characteristic agriculture, bamboo weaving industry, leisure experience, cultural creativity, and beautiful village construction. Building renovations retain and utilize the spatial texture and scale of existing forest clusters and courtyards. Architectural space design reflects the characteristics of the West Sichuan forest cluster's closeness to and integration with nature. The style maintains the original village form, achieving different village industries and forming a unique village.

Among them, "Bamboo Forest," as a rural community cultural and creative exhibition and exchange center with multiple functions in Zhuyi Village, attempts to integrate into the surrounding natural ecological environment, explore the interaction between cities and new rural construction, and combine traditional construction techniques with prefabricated industrialization.

3. Integrating multiple arts, introducing public cultural and tourism service projects such as "Sanjing Academy," "Jianwai Art Museum," "Zunshen Courtyard," "Bamboo Weaving Art Workshop," "Yang Longmei Studio," and "Ding Zhizhu," bringing together folk traditional craft production content such as weaving (including bamboo weaving), micro-carving, ceramics, fabric art, wood art, embroidery, and shadow puppetry.

4. Positioning intangible cultural heritage handicrafts as fashionable and international, introducing unique resources such as "Chengdu Gifts," Universiade licensed products, and the Tianfu Cultural and Creative Market. Combining the sorting of traditional Daoming bamboo weaving techniques, the quality of "Chongzhou Gifts" is improved, and the characteristic brand of Zhuyi Village's folk cultural and artistic hometown is cultivated and developed.

Village Industry Structure

Zhuyi Village officially opened to the public in 2017. With its beautiful natural scenery and renovated pastoral scenery, relying on the internet-famous building "Bamboo Forest," it quickly became a popular "check-in" spot among Chengdu residents' WeChat Moments. Zhuyi Village represented Chinese rural areas at the Venice Architecture Biennale.

1. Daoming Bamboo Grove (Cultural Exchange Space)

Backed by a bamboo forest in an "∞" shape, representing infinity and a topological transformation of the Tai Chi symbol, symbolizing the life aesthetics of Chongzhou Daoming Bamboo Art Village: integration and infinity.

Creatively combining Sichuan-style folk houses with modern streamline art, it presents the characteristics of Sichuan-style new Chinese architecture, creating a blend of traditional natural landscape elements and design aesthetics.

2. The Fifth Space

A collection of basic life infrastructure services in the bamboo art village, integrating functions such as public toilets, tea rooms, public seating, express delivery, ATMs, and children's play areas. Half house, half bridge, the "X" shaped plane extends into the site, with curved cross-section sloped roofs and a landscape rest bridge that allows visitors to climb high and look far.

3. Hotels and Inns

Hotel rooms are located at the original Academy of Fine Arts dormitory, on a hillside, with a long layout along the east-west direction, facing the village. Combining the site environment, 8 independent single-story rooms are compactly scattered in the forest site, lightly touching the ground, with changing rooms, small bars, wardrobes, sofas, desks, televisions and other facilities.

In addition, the bamboo art village also holds daily salons sharing related to art festivals and architecture festivals, as well as overseas artist residency programs, children's art festivals, intangible cultural heritage markets, etc. By holding various themed activities, such as country music festivals, street performer performances, and rural fun sports meets, it attracts tourists and expands brand influence.

Summary

Rural development is not something that happens overnight. Like the Bamboo Art Village, it needs to use art to illuminate the countryside, making the intangible cultural heritage of "bamboo weaving" a brand barrier, becoming an irreplaceable and unique famous village, in order to better develop rural revitalization.
