More than a month ago, the sixth and newest cruise ship of Disney Cruise Line—the Disney Treasure—officially made its maiden voyage from Port Canaveral, Florida.

This year, it will complete 17 round-trip voyages on the Caribbean route, keeping busy from the beginning to the end of the year.

The addition of the Disney Treasure has finally brought the number of land-based Disney parks and sea-based Disney parks to parity, but this balance will soon be broken, as the largest Disney ship in history, the “Disney Adventure,” will embark on its maiden voyage at the end of the year.

More importantly, the Disney Adventure will be Disney's first cruise ship in Asia; however, the birth of this maritime behemoth came from an accident.

The largest Disney park at sea, from an unfinished ship

Building a large-tonnage cruise ship, from project initiation and preparation to design and construction, takes at least three years, often five, and sometimes even seven to ten years. For example, the current world's largest cruise ship, Icon of the Seas, is a “sea palace” conceived over 7 years and designed and built over 900 days.

It's no exaggeration to describe the cruise ship construction process as “ten years to sharpen a sword,” but Disney is an exception. Since the maiden voyage of its first cruise ship in 1998, they have almost maintained an update frequency of “ten years for two ships.”

According to the original plan, the arrival of the Disney Adventure might have been a bit later, but a “half-finished ship” that appeared out of nowhere pushed Disney's plans onto the agenda.

In 2022, Asian cruise giant Genting Hong Kong announced that its MV shipyard in Schwerin, Germany, had filed for bankruptcy. After ceasing operations, its 17 cruise ships were successively sold. Among them, the largest unfinished luxury cruise ship, “Global Dream,” was acquired by Disney Cruise Line in the same year.

At the media conference at the time, Disney Cruise Line stated that the Global Dream would be renamed, redesigned, and repainted. To meet Disney Cruise Line's design and entertainment needs, Disney reduced the estimated passenger capacity of this “unfinished ship” from the original 9,000 people to around 6,000 people.

This is the circuitous journey of the Disney Adventure. Since the Global Dream was already 90% built before Disney took over, this “pleasant surprise” came faster than originally planned.

Children's dreams come true, grown-ups remain young at heart.

The arrival of the Disney Adventure holds significant importance in many aspects: it is the largest Disney cruise ship in terms of tonnage and passenger capacity in history; it is also Disney's first cruise ship in Asia; furthermore, it will break the historical status of MSC Virtuosa and Spectrum of the Seas in Asia, soon becoming the largest cruise ship in Asia.

Let's first look at the basic data of the Disney Adventure to get a more intuitive understanding of its size.

Length: 342 meters

Passenger Capacity: Approximately 6,700 people

Crew Members: Approximately 2,500 people

Generally, a cruise ship over 150,000 tons can be called a mega-ship. The Disney Adventure, entering the “200,000 club,” is definitely “ultra-mega.”

A large tonnage means a larger usable area and higher passenger capacity. The 342m×46m Disney Adventure is equivalent to the size of two standard football fields, and its 19 decks rising from it can accommodate 6,700 passengers and 2,500 crew members.

Previously, the maximum passenger capacity for Disney cruise ships was at most 4,000 people, which was for the Dream and Fantasy ships more than a decade ago. The Disney Adventure has directly more than doubled this long-standing limit.

With the foundation of a large space laid, the next step is how to utilize every corner of this behemoth to its fullest? For Disney, how to bring more unique elements to sea, while also differentiating the experience from land-based parks, is where they need to put in the most effort.

Although the Disney Adventure is still being modified overtime at the MV Werften shipyard in Wismar, Germany, Disney hasn't kept everyone in suspense; they have already revealed the complete virtual version of the Disney Adventure online.

7 Major Theme Parks

Disney will create 7 theme parks on the Disney Adventure, and each themed space will feature familiar Disney animation elements.

Disney Imagination Space is located in the center of the ship. It is a comprehensive gathering hall where you can not only attend dances but also enjoy cuisine from all over the world at Gramma Tala's Kitchen and Mowgli's Eatery.

The Marvel Heroes stage show “Avengers Assemble!” will also be performed in the Imagination Space. Characters such as Spider-Man, Iron Man, Captain America, Black Widow, Thor, Black Panther, and others will appear one after another, using stunts and acrobatics to recreate movie battle scenes at sea.

The leisure area located at the aft of the ship is Disney Discovery Reef. Its ocean-themed decor immediately brings to mind classic marine animations like “Finding Nemo” and “The Little Mermaid.” This is essentially a dining fusion zone, ranging from bars and cafes to upscale restaurants like Palo Trattoria and Mike and Sulley's Flavors of Asia. A slow pace and full stomachs are synonymous with Discovery Reef.

Cruises are all about balancing activity and relaxation. There should be places to rest and unwind, as well as exciting and stimulating facilities. The Toy Story Play Area on the top deck is a comprehensive water park: Woody & Jessie's crazy slides, the Toy Story splash zone, family pools... numerous water activities, it's like a Disney park at sea. You can enjoy the ocean view while playing in the water.

Following the principle of "having it all," Disney has included as many entertainment options as possible on the Wish. So, in addition to water activities, land-based facilities are also a major highlight of the entertainment area.

Located on the top deck, the Marvel Avengers Campus brings race cars, airplanes, and even roller coasters onto the ship. The Ironcycle Test Run is not only the first roller coaster on a Disney cruise ship, but also the longest at sea, exceeding 820 feet (approximately 250 meters) in length.

After eating and playing, if you still have time, the Explorers' Cove is the perfect place to relax. It's an outdoor lounge area with plenty of lounge chairs and beach chairs.

Looking out, there's the endless ocean; looking forward, there's a huge screen that not only plays classic Disney animations but also, with dancers and stage design, transforms into an open-air show venue. The musical "Moana: The Call of the Ocean" is also performed in Explorers' Cove.

If you've been to Disney before, what will likely leave a lasting impression is not only the various childhood memories, but also the 9D cinema combining various technologies.

In San Fransokyo on the Wish, you can experience the same thrill. The Baymax Theater and Big Hero Arcade together form a family game lounge with plenty of games and technology.

Finally, the most luxuriously decorated Town Square is the ship's premier indoor entertainment center. It's like a city's commercial center, with restaurants, shops, and a theater. During the voyage, guests can also see grand Broadway-style performances here.

The style of Town Square clearly shows that it's designed for grand spectacles.

After exploring the Wish, I found that the number of entertainment options and restaurants is almost equal, and I even felt that dining is the hidden gem on the Wish.

In addition to food and drinks from all over the world, Disney has designed each restaurant with a different theme. From luxurious family dinners to milk tea and barbecue fast food, wherever there's food, the decor is as appealing as the food itself: delicious and visually stunning.

Disney cruises primarily target families, so the ship offers numerous family-friendly scenes and entertainment facilities, as well as areas specifically designed for "kids and adults" of different ages.

Children aged 3 to 10 can interact with characters from the screen at the Disney Oceaneer Club, Marvel's WEB-Slingers, and Andy's Room. Each space has age-appropriate entertainment facilities, allowing children to enter the world of Disney.

While accompanying their children and indulging in their own childlike wonder, adults also have their own leisure time: spas, gyms, bars, and cafes are all available.

In short, every passenger can find their perfect way to relax in this Disney castle at sea.

To meet the diverse accommodation needs of each family, the Wish, like other cruise ships, offers a variety of room types, from basic inside staterooms without windows to luxurious ocean-view rooms with stunning sea views. Room sizes vary, but they are all large enough for a modern small family.

The cost of the Wish varies greatly depending on the room type, number of passengers, and length of stay, ranging from ¥1056/person to ¥8011/person. For a standard family of three, and if you can get a lower price ticket, the cost can be controlled to within ¥3000.

Moreover, of the more than 30 entertainment and dining options available on board, nearly 70% are included in the ticket price. Therefore, theoretically, once you successfully board, you may not need to spend any extra money, as most of the most interesting and worthwhile areas are included in the package.
